DTS Announces DTS:X Immersive Surround Sound Format

DTS has announced its next-generation, object-based codec technology called DTS:X. This new format promises so much more than what we've seen from first gen Dolby Atmos!

DTS:X, which will be launched in March 2015, is the successor to the company's DTS-HD Master Audio, which is found in an overwhelming number of Blu-ray discs. DTS:X will be supported by nearly 90% of home AV receivers.

Will this new immersive surround technology be a game changer for home theater or just a copy of the competition which has suffered a rough start so far due to lack of software and gimmicky upfiring speakers?

Read our DTS:X Announcement loaded with info beyond the press releases published at CES!

I shall wait 2 years until this sound 3d format war as ended. By then I should be able to buy a top line model for £150.00. :p

Definitely need to wait at least another year. :)

But it seems like most companies are putting their stock into DTS, not Dolby.

Problems with Current Audio Visual Gear:

Video: Still no full bandwidth HDCP 2.2 4:4:4 on TVs or projectors, even the new Sony models etc are 4:2:0. Wait another year
Audio: Let the 3D format wars fight it out, still not HDCP 2.2 4:4:4 on receivers or pre/pros. Wait another year

My gear works, I am setting up my HT room for 7.4.x with speakers (pre wire) and will wait a year before purchasing any new equipment. Not worth Dolby Atmos right now with about 5 movies anyway

Plan is to save up for 2016, going to be an expensive year :)

I'm glad I'm not in the market for an AVR or pre-pro.

This video was shot before CES so our article has more detailed info about DTS:X, but a good discussion nonetheless.

I voted for DTS:X because of the prospect for dialog object control and potential improvements for standard 5.1 setups.
I am not moving from 5.1 so that is an advantage.

The author of this article makes the case for coexistence:

Dueling Surround Formats Won’t Sow Confusion

Dolby is selling advantages for 5.1 systems:

More important, DTS:X “supports any speaker layout,” including Dolby Atmos speaker layouts that include height speakers, said Kirchner. Consumers won’t have to worry about cluttering up their living rooms with two separate speaker configurations and switching between them depending on the soundtrack they’re playing.

DTS has “worked with manufacturers to make sure the first implementations include pre-selected [speaker] layouts which overlap with familiar layouts,” a spokesperson added. Familiar layouts include 5.1 layouts without height speakers.

“We don’t require elevation speakers,” Kirchner said. “We can render height virtually.” It will be the manufacturer’s decision to support traditional 5.1-speaker layouts, he noted. Although there are advantages to more speakers, “flexibility adds more value to the consumer.” DTS:X supports speaker configurations ranging from 2.1 to 22.2. Here at International CES, DTS is demonstrating 22.2-channel DTS:X. “You identify the locations of the speakers and render to it,” Kirchner said.

Great info Rich. I am hearing that getting DTS:X via a FW upgrade to existing Atmos AV Receivers is unlikely but I hope my sources are wrong.

It may be bad news for the early adopter, but I think it might actually be good news.
I would rather have enough DSP power so that DTS can do the speaker location and dialog processing with the first release.
That seems better than a limited product that is replaced in 6 months.

Agreed hence why I've upgraded no receiver or processor in my systems. First Gen Atmos just didn't cut the mustard for my needs and reflection speakers never will :)

And then again, this may end up sounding like other DSP modes that we have all played with and most turned off long ago :p :D

It's nice that the manufacturers will keep your busy.
IMO, Dolby screwed up the roll-out of their sound formats.

A lot of folks seem happy and maybe even relieved that DTS announced Object Oriented sound format; There wont be a Dolby monopoly.

Most people are lucky to have Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD in their home theater systems. They're even luckier if they have at least 5 properly placed and setup speakers and a sub that are also ALL functional :)

Another comical video Gene, Hugo. HW: "No comment" lol

I'll watch the battle in the trenches and see who sticks up white tissue to surrender. Its not the time to buy right now. And what is this HDMI 2.0? Is good or bad? Will it make for more efficient Onkyo with less troublesome HDMI of issues of the past receivers with newer generation models.

That looks simple to set up. Does the rule book say it must be in circle or can it be square configuration. I think square shape will work. The rooms red lighting does that change colours.

"No videoing during presentation" so why no video what do they have to hide? When Apollo 11, landed on the moon there was video.

I voted "none" I am perfectly happy with DTS HD and True HD. I stopped being an early adopter long ago. If I had money to waste then maybe it would be different but I don't so it is what it is.
At this point 100% of the people that come into my home theater that aren't HT nuts like us think my setup is great and even the few people that even understand what I have say it sounds fantastic.
