Resale is a huge issue if you have not found your perfect-fit system.

If you are unsure what your ideal system is, it is safer to stick with something with a higher resale value. That way you can easily sell them later to buy your felicitous system like I did. :)

"Excellent taste" doesn't mean much if you end up having to sell your speakers for a huge lost. The $22K MSRP Salon2 were sold for about $11K. The $15K MSRP B&W 802D were sold for about $9K. The $18K MSRP KEF 201/2 (3 pairs) were sold for about $8K.

I define "excellent taste" as something you can unequivocally say is your ideal system and wholeheartedly believe there isn't anything else significantly better in terms of SQ.
You have a very weird definition of excellent taste.

As for your losses, I think the resale prices you got were what I would expect for those models in near-new condition. Assuming a 20% discount is typical, you paid no more than $17,600 for the Salon2s, and I suspect you paid substantially less than that since you used to brag about the prices you got. At a $17,600 cost basis, $11,000 means you recovered over 60% of what you paid, which is quite excellent for the resale high-end speaker market, of a model that has been available for seven years or more. You may have really recovered 70% or more. I'd guess the same is about true of the B&Ws, so I'm guessing you're over-stating the "huge loss" part. I think you did pretty well for your foray into speaker collecting.

I paid about $15K for the Salon2. Sold for about $11K. Actually, the $11K included the $1K crate shipping, so it was more like $10K net. That's a $5K loss.

I paid $12K for the 802D2 and got back $9K. That's another $3K loss. So that's $8K loss for 2 pairs of speakers, which isn't "a little loss".

The point is not about "good taste" or "bad taste". It's not a contest. It's only "good" if you find the best-fit speakers you can be happy with for the next 20-30 years.

You've gone off the deep end. You can't even take a compliment without twisting it into a value judgment. As for good taste being indicated only by speakers that some person could be happy with for 30 years, that's illogical.

It's called depreciation, you will get a stronger taste of that when you trade in your new 570 down the road...only it will be a lot more than 8k :)

I did fairly well with my paradigms when I traded them in. Paid $1175 for my CC-690 sold for 1100 :) Paid $2800 for my Studio 100s sold for $2400.00. (They were only 1.5yrs old) Only got bad return on my older ADP-490s which were purchased in 2004 so 10 years old paid $800 sold for 475 pair.

Its the price we pay for the gear we buy. Albeit, my pain point was a little over $1300. Not counting my 10 year old Surrounds, I didn't do too bad. :)

Oh, I understand depreciation. My point was that people shouldn't do what I did and waste money on a bunch of speakers just because some people consider it "good tastes". ;)

I'm just saying that I do regret buying all those speakers. That's how I feel. Don't take it personally because I sold the Salon2 and went all RBH.

I'm saying that I would not have bought all those speakers if I could go back in time. I would have just bought the RBH towers in the first place and be done.

Funny. Without having all the others, you would not be where you are now... Certain that the RBH are your favorites.

Many times when I look back at money/time wasted on "bad" stuff, and think I shouldn't have done that, it occurs to me that without having "done that", I wouldn't be or understand where I am now.

That is the irony in life - The-Chicken-or-the-Egg debate. :)

We realize that everything that happens in life shapes us. Our trial and error and pain pave the future. But we can't help feeling what we feel. The heart feels what the heart feels, right? It's like talking about "the good old days" and how we would have done things differently. :D

Of course, this leads right into our New Year Resolution. :D

Here's mine: increase aerobic exercise, eat less fat, and enjoy more life. :D

It doesn't bother me at all that you like the RBHs better than the Salon2s. I didn't design them, I just bought them. I've never understood people who get defensive about their buying decisions, and that wasn't part of my response. I was only responding to your incomprehensible and illogical comments regarding good taste.

It is illogical, but quite comprehensible why people get a little defensive when others don't agree with them.

OMG. Now that is my kind of crazy overkill. :D

Is it made for a football size HT room? :D

These make my 61" SX-T2/R towers look like bookshelf speakers.

Just insane.

How did you determine/know that the RBH's were your perfect-fit system?
Sorry if I missed a post on this - was off the forum for a while.

Shane says the bass portion is the equal of the Status 8T's in terms of output and this system will play as loudly as the 8T system but it's a different animal all together. I can't wait to hear them though I'm not bringing them into my house :) I will have to get a demo at CEDIA.

Kind of like knowing whom to marry after you've dated about 12 women over 6 years. :D ;)

Multi-factorial for sure.

Obviously, they have to sound awesome. No point otherwise. ;)

After listening to many speakers throughout the years, I got a great feeling about the RBH.

For one, I always wanted a full-range tower system that didn't require additional subwoofers, but could still bring down the house if needed (the first 30 seconds of the movie "Edge of Tomorrow" is a good example :D).

But the ONLY way to achieve that is to have towers that can be ACTIVELY bi-amped via LFE. For example, even if I had 5 x Revel Salon2 or 5 x B&W 800D2 or 5 KEF Blade2 or 5 x Salk Soundscape12, none of these towers could be actively bi-amped via LFE and none could bring down the house in terms of bass output. I would still need dual subwoofers even if had 11 Salon2 in the room.

But I can't stand built-in amps, so the active bass had to be done via external amps, unlike towers with built-in amps.

I also wanted speakers that measure very accurately on-axis and off-axis and are made by a company that doesn't lie about the spec - you know like saying their speakers go down to 14Hz, but is more like 28Hz. :) Speakers that I could be proud of owning.

There may be other "perfect-fit" systems out there, but they may also cost a lot more too. If I were a billionaire, I would have 5 Focal Grande Utopia towers actively bi-amped via LFE by 5 McIntosh MC452 amps and a McIntosh MX121 pre-pro with Audyssey Dynamic EQ. :D

IMO, 5 x SX-T2 tower or 5 x SX-8300 towers is the "perfect-fit" system. Or 4 identical towers + 1 horizontal center speaker if the vertical center is impractical.

It's a different monster alright, being about 18" wide, 75" tall, and 21" deep.

That top cabinet would make the biggest horizontal center speaker. :)

Might have to get a demo pair myself. :D
