Is this a good idea? I have never used a universal remote before. Do I lose much (any?) ability with the Harmony?

Absolutely NOT! I have two of the 650's and hands down the best part of my system which controls my 50" plasma, ps3, directv, and my sony dn 840. My only gripe is that it can't control my ps4. And In my opinion the 650 is a better deal than the 700.

Harmony are good remotes and easy to program using their web based setup.

The problem I have with them is they attempt to remember the state of your equipment and do not send On/Off commands when discrete commands exist.
With each activity you can add commands (I forget the specifics) that are always sent. This can be a good work-around to that problem.

Their remotes are great, but apps are free so they are good enough for me.:D

Elaborate please.
Are you saying there are apps that work as universal remotes via phone?

You can get free apps for a particular device and there are apps that charge like Roomie:

Some have optional IR emitters others use IP control.

PENG may have others in mind.
