Dolby Atmos Compatibility Issues on Older Blu-ray Players

While you need at least a pair of height speakers and a new A/V receiver to enjoy the benefits of Dolby Atmos, the theory was that you didn't need to upgrade your Blu-ray player. However, we've found that users of some older model BD players may experience audio dropouts with some TrueHD and Atmos tracks. The issue relates to a feature called Seamless Branching, which was added to Dolby TrueHD after the original spec, not to mention quite a few Blu-ray players, were released.

So...................... spend more money and time, buy new speakers, mount new speakers and wires, buy new AVR, and buy new BD player so you can have better localization of surround sound effects behind you. However, it won't improve anything in the MAIN front 3 channels in FRONT of you. :)

There is a reason many people (including DTS) increase the Front Center Speaker Channel Level purposefully, instead of increasing the surround channel levels in the REAR. ;)

Just add this to the list of reasons that I really don't care about Atmos at all.

I have better things to spend my $ on.

We need better content before we worry about how the content is delivered. 90% of the movies produced nowadays are crap!

Sorry, I can't hear you because my ATMOS rear, side, and ceiling SURROUND speakers are too loud and I can't hear anything from the FRONT. :D

Because Dolby insists on screwing up playback on older BD-players, I will avoid ALL Atmos-encoded Blu-rays -- prefer DTS anyway. Dolby is to blame for NOT making their audio tracks fully backward compatible AS CLAIMED and I see no reason to throw my Oppo BDP83SE away just because Dolby thinks I should buy a new BD-player to enjoy Blu-ray movies even though I would NEVER install an Atmos system. Guess Dolby feels that I should add four more amplifier channels and a new processor too and throw out what I presently enjoy -- screw them.

Definitely no love lost for Dolby from many folks who realize they have to buy new gears just so they can have the majority of the speakers in the rear and ceiling and the minority of speakers in the front for the most crucial channels.

I often hear people complain they could not hear the DIALOGUE clearly at movie theaters - as if the actors were mumbling.

I have NEVER heard ANYONE complain they didn't hear enough of the surround speakers. Dolby is genius. :)

Yeah, let's throw away the current BD players and buy new ATMOS-compatible BD players. Unbelievable.

Change the scenery on that program with only front action. ;) :D

Just realized my Bdp-103 does support it, but wouldn't change it anyway.

On top of that, my receiver doesn't support it, and my 7 floor-standing speakers are already plenty of clutter for the living-room as it is, so I'll pass on Atmos for a while yet...
