Having Trouble with "Audio In"

I have a new Samsung 75" series 6300 HDTV. I tried to play a slideshow on the TV from my MacBook Pro. As with my other TV, I connected the video with an DVI-HDMI cable to the TV. For the audio, I connected a cable from the Mac's headphone jack to the left & right RCA connectors on the TV's Component/AV AUDIO IN panel. The video played fine; but no audio whatsoever. I'm dumbfounded or missing something obvious. BTW, I checked the audio cable & it works fine. And, the volume on the Mac was turned up.

I would really appreciate any thoughts. Thank you kindly!

So, if you hooked up video to the HDMI port (with an adapter as it may be), then the TV has to be set to the HDMI input to get video. The audio is not on the HDMI input.

My $ says that if you swap over to the component input on the TV settings, then you will have sound and no picture.

I doubt this setup is gonna work like you expected. The only way it will work is if the TV will let you take video from 1 source and audio from a different source. I dunno if any TVs have such a feature.

Not positive, but my spidey sense tells me that when the TV is using an HDMI input, it takes the video from the HDMI connection.

The hook-up that I described in my original post works perfectly fine on my Panasonic plasma HDTV. Since my MacBook Pro is an older model, my video-out connector is a DVI port. By connecting the the DVI output on the Mac to one of the additional HDMI ports on the Samsung HDTV, the video plays perfectly.

So let me rephrase my question differently. How can I connect my MacBook Pro to the HDTV to run the audio through the HDTV?

Thanks!

I doubt that you can.

Your new tv might have a separate audio input switch. Check out the manual. If it doesn't - you're out of luck. Time to upgrade your mbp

No doubt. DVI passes video, no audio. When you convert DVI to HDMI, you get all the video you want.

So, video is not your problem. HDMI, however, passes both video AND audio through the same connector.

It's the audio that needs to be converted to HDMI as well. You need some kind of adaptor that will also convert your audio at the same tile it converts your video and I'm not sure they exist.

Then go back to the Panny :p

That is a classic logical fallacy. You can't expect everything to work exactly the same on new equipment from a different manufacturer like it did on your old equipment.

We have a thread going where we've discussed how sometimes an "upgrade" turns out to be a waste of time and $. And/or, an upgrade introduces a problem to your system that wasn't there before. Looks like that's what just happened to you.

It was very common up until the last year or two for TV's to accommodate DVI signals through their HDMI inputs by allowing you to choose an analog input to get sound along with the HDMI for video. Many TV's used to have dedicated "DVI Audio" inputs.

Quote from your TV's user manual:
"DVI cannot carry audio. To listen to the computer sound, connect the external speaker to the computer’s audio output connector."
Most new models do not have this and the Monoprice product BoredSysAdmin linked to is probably your best bet.
