Optical Sound Wire from TV to REceiver

I am setting up my theater room and I want to be able run an optical wire from the TV back to the receiver so i can use the system for stuff i use on the tv directly (if i stream down there and such).

I found two on monoprice..one says 8 mm and the other says 5 mm

how do i know which one i need?

The thicker one is just physically stronger, typically costs more.

Yep, the 8mm version has a mesh metal jacket around the cable. I think those look cool, but I've used the regular ones for many years without ever damaging one.
