At least as far as futureshop goes and for 799.95$ cnd.... After taxes and 5 year warranty it came to 1018$ ..... Most i have ever spent on something like this, my friends and family think im crazy lol. I hope i wont be dissappointed, could have got the x3000 for 250$ less..... Still considering it...

Now to plan a trip to seattle so i can pick up some speakers without paying duty....

Is the x4000 worth the extra 250$?
Yes, but with a few provisos (in order of priority):

  1. The extra $250 does not come out of your speaker budget.

  2. You are prepared to spend $3000 to $4000 in total on speakers and subs.*

  3. You will have dual subs at some future stage to take advantage of Audyssey's SubEQ-HT.
* An AVR should only amount to about 20 - 25% of your total audio budget, otherwise you've overspent on the AVR at the expense of speakers and subs. More money spent on superior speakers will always reap a greater audio reward than extra money spent on a higher end AVR.

The X4000 is a great bit of kit for <$1000, but not if it only leaves you with <$1000 for five speakers and a sub. ;)

$250 is more than worth the price for Audyssey XT32 + dual SubHT EQ.

After Audyssey XT32 came out, Denon offered owners of the Denon AVP-A1 & 5308 an upgrade to Audyssey XT32 (and other minor upgrades) for about $1200 ! No doubt the salient upgrade was for XT32 + dual SubHT EQ.

So $250 is well worth the price IMO.

Cool, thx guys. I figure I can always upgrade my speakers at leisure, I'd rather have a solid backbone that I don't have to worry about for years......

Amazon is now selling the X4000 for $800. Won't be too long before we see the $650 mark. :D

I was eyeballing that price on Amazon, then saw that for 200 more at Accessories 4 Less I could get a factory refurbished 4520. I decided to jump on it, but was having issues getting it into a shopping cart on line. So I phoned them the next day, and upgraded to a brand new A stock for surprisingly little over the refurbished. I've been chugging along with an Onkyo 876 for 6 years now, and it's been rock solid, but these models had a 8-10 second delay for HDMI handshake, noisy relays when changing sources, heat issues, plus it seemed to be fussy with a new Oppo 103.

Anyway, it's a good time to buy Denon, as long as you're okay with no Atmos.

Just go to Best Buy and ask the manager if he would honor the sale Best Buy stores were having a few weeks ago. They were selling brand new Denon 4520 for $1K. Why would anyone buy refurbished? :D

We're not supposed to reveal the price paid, but let's just say I wouldn't need to go to Best Buy. I've been reading up on the 4520, and man is it loaded, Audyssey XT32 sounds pretty amazing.

Congrats! Sound like you are getting an incredible deal for a new unit that presumably should come with a 3 year factory warranty. The 4520 in preamp mode is essentially a AV8801 without the balanced output, that's even confirmed by D&M support. I can tell you my AV8801's XT32/sub EQHT is doing an excellent job for me in flattening my room response and integrating two different subs. I think you are going to enjoy this feature rich beast.
