Choosing from several models

Hello,

I've been thinking about upgrading my home audio system (designed for music, not for movies). And it all starts from the amp or receiver (in fact, the FM/AM tuner would be a nice but not an essential feature). After browsing websites and forums I've picked out several models which can fit my budget. They are:
- Denon PMA-520AE
- Yamaha R-S500
- Sherwood AX-5505
- Onkyo TX-8020

If judged by the sound quality and overall reliability, which one would you recommend me to buy? If there are any other amps/receivers of better quality but the same price range (as my budget is limited), I'd be glad to hear your advices.

Thanks,
Paul

Denon or Yamaha.

I would call Electronic Expo and ask for the Denon X2000 for $350 shipped. Otherwise the Denon E400 is $350 on Amazon.

Do notice how forum mod recommends you to buy an a/v receiver models despite that you had asked for stereo only. There is a very good reason for that.
A) subwoofer integration - very few speakers can truly be a full range. In most cases you would want to offload bass to a dedicated speaker.

B) because of economy of scale and continued improvements in technology you won't loose anything by using a surround receiver for 2.0 or 2.1.
Denon and Yamaha both solid brands, but denon packs more features.
