Check your input settings on the receiver to see if they are configured correctly. Read the manual (page 23) to see how this is accomplished.

I wonder if there might be some sort of HDCP conflict going on since you have your cable box hooked up via composite and your receiver going to your TV with HDMI? Is there a reason why you aren't connecting your cable box with HDMI as well? Most newer devices don't even support composite cables anymore. That could be your problem.

Your best bet is to call Yamaha's customer service and have them walk you through the process.

I didn't have a hdmi cable but now that I have bought one and connected the settopbox over hdmi that works. But that still doesn't solve the problem with the DVD player that doesn't have a hdmi output.

How are you connecting the dvd player to the Yamaha? Are you using composite (which is only one cable) or are you using component (which are 3 cables)? If you're using component video, make sure that you are not mixing up the cables; red to red, green to green, and blue to blue. If you have one of these connections mixed up, you will NOT get any video out.

You also have to configure the dvd input on the receiver to tell the receiver what kind of signal to expect at the dvd input.

The three cables you are referring to in composite is left/right audio and one video signal. Component video is made up of 3 cables strictly for video with no audio cable.
