First off id like to say hi to everyone and thanks in advance for whatever help you can offer. Heres my issue. Im looking into setting up multiple rooms for playing only music. Nothing too technical with perfect placement and whatnot, but more of a parts list of what ill need. The plan is to throw 4 speakers in my unfinished basement (where i lift) and 2 in the bathroom. The goal is to have all the speakers wired into (an amp? a receiver?) then just run a cord from said (amp?) to the laptops audio out. id prefer a small amp, just something simple that i can plug in the wall and hit an on/off switch, but the research ive been doing seems that thats not the way to go. receivers on the other hand are quite large, unsightly, and i would need to dedicate quite a bit of space for it to sit. i know you can spend thousands on audio equipment, but id prefer to keep the cost down as much as possible. Remember, i wont be blasting music to window flexing levels here.

First, welcome to the site..

why 4 speakers in the basement? Stereo tends to sound good with 2 speakers...
are these going to be built in speakers {ceiling mount} or bookshelf speakers?
will you be plugging this into the headphone jack or the USB port?
What is the actual budget and what do you need to get in that budget, cables, speakers, amp, ect?

I will start you off with a few things to think about..

If you are going to put a pair of speakers in each room {not sure how much time you spend in the basement bathroom, why speakers would need to be in there} it can be easier to just run an amp for each room and run a RCA cable with a splitter from your source..
Amazon.com: Lepai LP-2020A+ Tripath Class-T Mini Audio Amplifier with Power Supply Black: Electronics also cheaper since the amp is cheaper than a volume control, never mind the selector box....

I am not sure what your basement looks like, but maybe just a simple system would be better in one room... Kind of quality vs quantity...

Dayton Audio APA150 150W Power Amplifier that amplifier with this dac to hook into your pc Amazon.com: MUSE USB DAC PCM2704 Sound Card Optical Coaxial Decoder USB to S/PDIF Converter: Electronics and this set of speakers CBM-170 SE High Performance Bookshelf Loudspeaker that will be loud enough to here through out any basement I have ever been in and the sq qill be quite impressive as well... A very nice gym set up for sure...

If you want to spend a little less these speakers http://www.wavecrestaudio.com/products/hvl-1-two-way-loudspeaker-pair with this amp http://www.daytonaudio.com/index.php/audio-video/audio-amplifiers/dayton-audio-dta-120-class-t-digital-mini-amplifier-60-wpc.html can get you there too

ive stumbled on both of those amps during my stint of research there and that was the way i was hoping to go. as for my budget, right now its low. i was planning on using sets of car speakers i had laying around for the time being just to get any sort of sound going. as for a splitter from my source, problem there is my source is a laptop and it would move from room to room instead of a central location (like a receiver)

basiclly looking for several similar mini systems that i can just plug in via a headphone jack (if possible)
ill post up a simple map of the basement layout (current project room) so you have a better idea of what im thinking.
laptop station (ill label it LS in the picture) is a laptop tray connected to a wall mounted arm (can be seen in the 'frequently bought together' area) and with the cable management the arm provides have the audio cable just hanging there (along with an hdmi cord to a tv) quickly connect or disconnect from a laptop.

(cant post links with a post count lower than 6, sorry guys)

i like the mini amp idea but was concerned about wether or not these would be enough to drive the speakers. i only plan to run car speakers for the time being, but would still like to be able to upgrade in the future. guess what im asking now is, will those speakers be enough for what im looking for? and if so, is one a better choice than the other? what should i be looking for in a mini amp?

the lepai 2020 is more powerful than you would think.. On a budget running car speakers, I would say why not? The other issue is most car speakers are 4 ohm......
