The Most Accurate Sounds..... Pure Direct ON??? How do you listen to your HD music?

I always prefer "live" music, but mostly (say 90%) live unamplifier music. I am not sure if that means I always prefer accurate sound, really not sure..

You like sound that is crystal clear, ultra detailed, full lifelike 3 dimensional sound, and great punchy snappy tight energetic musical bass.

I like that sound too, except I like my bass to be a little extra crispy - shaken like a rag doll.

One thing is unequivocal - you like whatever sounds GREAT, not boring and lifeless.

I have a good room so I prefer flat.
Sitting directly between the speakers at about 8 feet away, engaging the DSP's changes the soundstage.

No, but I really meant Pure Direct.

My friend has a Denon AVP and a big hump in his room at 100Hz.
Audyssey did a great job on it and I did not hear any negative effects.

The AVP menu system is obtuse but the processor is really great. Definitely a keeper.

Oh, I see what you mean by the room & Pure Direct mode - if the room is bad, you might need Audyssey. But since your room is good, you don't need Audyssey. Same here.

I bypass Audyssey, but use DEQ for the subwoofer bass.

Did your friend buy the Audyssey Pro Kit (used in IMAX cinemas and DARTs systems) or is he using the standard Audyssey like most people?

I just checked with him, he is using the standard Audyssey XT32 but does own the Pro Kit.

Well, maybe he can loan you the Audyssey Pro Kit for your Marantz pre-pro since he is not using the Pro Kit.

I think he intends to use it. I believe Pro-kits are tied to a specific device.

No, it just means the magnitude is intense. Imagine shaking a 100lbs dumbbell (slow, barely moving) vs shaking a 1oz rag doll (fierce, intense, snappy, speedy, punchy).

There is no "Accurate". Everyones ears are different as are their listening environments. Two people can be at the same concert and still hear things differently. As soon as people realize that, the better off they will be.

According to the owner's manual on my Yamaha A/V receiver the Pure Direct mode plays back the selected source with the least circuitry in order to reduce the electrical noise from other circuitry (such as the front display). Remember the ancient axiom GIGO, Garbage In, Garbage Out. If the source material already sounds like garbage (dirty, scratched LP or tape) the result from Pure Direct mode may still be Garbage Out, although maybe a little less so. Trust your ears.

I use Sonos speakers to stream any audio format from my computer recorded files with a help of a phone app, that works like a remote controller and the sound is really great and nice! Even FLAC is supported.

I am realizing something here and I wanted to run this by you. Maybe you'll tell me that I am wrong .... but ... it seems like the best way to get the purest sound and the more accurate out of your Multichannel HD audio like concerts, DVDA or SACDs, or anything that has to do with 5.1 recorded Music is to set your receiver to Pure Direct.


that way, your receiver is in no way modifying the original sound AND it focuses just on providing power.

It depends what you are after and it really boils down to these two things.

1. If you want the flattest frequency response for your room, then engage the room correction software on your AVR instead of running pure direct.
   
2. If you are like me and want to listen to your speakers as is without room correction, then run them pure direct.

I only use pure direct when listening to two channel music like vinyl, CDs, and MP3 and without sub. When watching movies, YPAO is engaged.
