That is one of the disadvantages of using a servo sub. An external amp will not work in your case. You need to purchase a replacement amp form Velodyne.

Yeah, one reason I would never buy another powered subwoofer (amp inside subwoofer).

From now on, just buy non-powered subwoofers (subs that do not have amp inside). They are also called "passive" subs. :D

I also have 4 Velodyne non-powered subs in my family room.

If you had a non-powered sub, you could easily use a Crown XLS amp and the sound quality would be just as good IMO as long as you let Audyssey XT or XT2 EQ the sub.

1. My Velodyne sub is SC-600 IF/IC.
2. Just hook LFE output from AVR to the input on your amp. Then hook speaker cable from amp to sub.

replacement sub amp from velodyne- $425. These amps have had a history of issues. If you attempt to power it with another amp, you will need to modify the sub itself to achieve optimum performance. If you like the compact design of the sub, order the replacement, as removing the servo feedback rings will change the ts parameters.

as a note this sub is excellent in many areas, so amp replacement can be fruitful.

If he does that he will have little bass. The servo is active Eq, so if he uses an external amp, he will need an equalizer and a high pass filter.

His cheapest option is to buy a replacement amp.

Small sealed subs with no Eq have a very high F3.

No, I was referring to my sub - the Velodyne SC-600 IF/IC, which is a "passive" sub.

If his sub is servo, it is surely "active" and I wouldn't just hook up any amp to it.

He has a servo sub. Unfortunately the plate amps in those subs are not known for longevity. Velodyne apparently have good customer service, so he should contact them.

We are all in agreement that he either needs to get a replacement amp for $450+ and hope it doesn't malfunction again a year later an cost $450 every few years or just buy "passive" subs like I do and power the sub externally.

I have no qualms with "active"; I just prefer to actively power the subs and speakers externally. :D
