Our VSX-520 has been working for several weeks with no issues, until today. We are no longer getting sound from TV, cable box, tuner or blu-ray.

When attempting to access the setup menu or pushing the buttons on the remote for "auto/direct", "standard", "adv surr", the message "PHONESIN" flashes on the display. After searching through the entire manual (hard copy and online) as well as a thorough search on the internet, I can not figure out what this means.

To the best of our knowledge, no setting have been changed prior to this issue. All connections in and out of the receiver are through HDMI cables. We are currently running a DirecTV cable box and a Samsung BD-6500 Blu-Ray player connected into the receiver and the output is through the Samsung 6300 TV and surround sound with 4 speakers, 1 subwoofer and 2 auxiliary speakers.

A few troubleshooting ideas:

1) contact Pioneer directly and pose your question (perhaps try this first)

2) power down, unplug power, plug back in, power up
3) try a different HDMI cable and/or port
4) try your analog inputs on the VSX (RCA)
5) try a set of headphones on the headphone out
6) check the fuse (if there is one)
7) return VSX for a new or different model if you have some warranty

Disclaimer - these are generic recomendations as I have no experience with that model. Hope this helps.

It sounds like an error message indicating that the headphones are plugged in and functions like 'direct' or 'adv surr' are not available. That would also explain why no sound from any source makes it to the speakers.

Now the question is why does the receiver think the headphones are plugged in. If they are plugged in, then just unplug them and all will be well. If there are no headphones plugged in, then you might want to do a factory reset (the procedure is usually on the back page of the user manual).

I had the same problem.

Reset the receiver to factory settings.

Blow the dust around the headphone jack, give the headphone hack a few light taps to shake away any dust.

With the AVR OFF...
Take your headphone plug and insert it IN/OUT several times..
Within the headphone jack are contacts that can dirty/oxidized over time, this may work to clean the contacts.

Just my $0.05... ;)

Welcome. :)

Glad you were helped by the phone issue.
Now, tell us about your HDMI issue and as much info as possible under what conditions, etc, including component model number. Did it work before?
