The electromagnet on an automotive a/c compressor, can it get 'weak'? As PENG would put it, "is it sleeping a lot"? I have removed the shim which took the gap down from 49 (kinda sloppy) to 16 (kinda tight) thousandths. I'll see if that helps the clutch stay engaged. But anyway, can that magnet get weak?

EDIT: If my truck blows up, I am going be a little embarrassed.

2nd EDIT: I also put a couple a drops of some mystery oil (I mean I have no idea what kind of oil it is not actual Mystery Oil) on the three little clutch springs. Actually the first attempt was to sand the rust off the plates. That got me some further before melt down. I just did the shim removal and oil thing now but have not had it out for the long haul. As sweet as I think it all might be, who needs the drive when I could be doing this and listening to Itzhak?
How'd you make out?
16 is a little on the tight side... but you knew that.
The magnet can be weak if it's not getting full voltage. I used to test it by running my own wire directly from the battery, to see if that made a difference.

I guess resistance of the wire in the field coil/magnet thingy goes up with heat, lowering the voltage and decreasing magnetic tractor beamage (excuse the made up technical lingo). I read in this super long thread that spec is .014 - .030. Main thing is that the clutch isn't bound up and it's not. I actually called an a/c repair shop and they said they would only replace the clutch/compressor assembly as a single unit to the tune of about $400 and he didn't think there were any spacers/shims to adjust the air gap. My mechanic had no clue either but was too busy and backlogged to go further into it for the next 5 days anyway.

No long haul yet but my confidence level is at like 95%.
I wouldn't bet my life on it but somebody else's, no problem.

My posts get more and more fascinating with each edit.

I can't believe how much weight I've gained. I used to be a size small in most shirts with a 15.5 - 16" neck. Now I'm a large bordering on XL with a 17-17.5" neck. Yikes. Buying new dress clothes has been interesting.

A/C is mint. I reinstalled my wheel wells and saw that my idler arm had one lone grease fitting. Truck is mint. I can't get over what a difference the control arms with upper ball joints made.

I remember my Dad replacing some control arms and stuff like that in various old used pickups he's had and remembering what a difference it made in the ride.

Are you going to make a habit of posting your measurements and complaining about getting pulled over because of your girlfriend?:D

Good to hear the AC worked out.
Ford idler arms and starters, you can just mark it on your calendar to change them once a year.:D

I'm already eyeballin' the starter as being in need of a serious connector cleaning. The idler arm seems to be the one thing replaced by the previous owner. I think I'm all done but my parts guy always says, "see you later". Am I reading too much into that?

My arm is 15 inches. I'm just glad my g/f didn't catch me measuring that. My wrist is 8 inches.

I need to go ride around in a/c some more. I guess I could go try to fix those Primus speakers that I screwed up but that is work. Maybe shoot for a spark plug installation? Hmmm ... that's work too. Fofo's due for an oil change. Truck needs to have the fluid levels checked in the transfer case and front differential. Maybe I'll let a mechanic so that the next oil change. Starter connections should be addressed and then I can set the time on the radio once and for all.

It's a little early for this level of boredom. CAF? No. Steve has an obvious drinking problem and I'm not suppose to hang out with people like that. Even Doug knows to stay clear when Steve is on a tear.
