Need advice on completing a partial system

I inherited a partial surround sound system that has the following components: pair Klipsch KSF 10.5 towers, Klipsch KSF C5, Yamaha RX-V992, Pioneer VSX-820-A. It didn't have a subwoofer and the rear speakers were mounted in the wall, so it was not practical to take them.

I know very little about A/V systems. For all I know , these pieces could have been bought out of the back of a van in a Home Depot parking lot. I have a new 60" LG flat screen that I wouldn't mind adding surround sound to. If what I have is decent, I wouldn't mind spending a little money to get a pair of rear speakers and maybe a subwoofer.

I would appreciate any input that you knowledgeable folks out there might be willing to share. Thanks.

What would your budget be?

You can get something that performs well and costs little like
Amazon.com: BIC America F12 12-Inch 475-Watt Front Firing Powered Subwoofer: Electronics
Amazon.com: Fluance AVBP2 Home Theater Bipolar Surround Sound Satellite Speakers: Electronics

You can keep it all klipsch with Amazon.com: Klipsch Synergy S-10 Premium WDST Surround Speakers (Pair): Electronics and Klipsch RW 12 Black Powered Subwoofer | eBay

or you can step up to something better for more money, just depends on what you want to spend..

Thanks for your quick reply. I'm sure there is no end to what one can spend on this stuff. I looked at the equipment that you provided links for. I like the idea of staying with all Klipsch equipment. It is also well within my price range.

In your opinion, is the gear I have worth spending another $500 on to complete? I probably couldn't tell the difference between average and really high-end equipment , anyway.

You are very welcome..
Sure it is worth finishing the sytem for $500, I am not a fan of klipsch horn speakers but them are fine units and in good condition should sound great in an HT. For $500 I would personally get the fluance surrounds for $120 and this sub http://www.hsuresearch.com/products/stf-2.html, you can not beat that deal... The more you spend on a sub the better {in most cases, svs, hsu, rythmik, its true with all of them companies}..

PS you can do 3.1 also, which is fronts and a center with a single subwoofer, the surrounds are just effect speakers, some people like them some don't, I enjoy 5. systems personally...

(Assuming you meant Pioneer VSX-820-K) Keep the Pioneer receiver for the surround setup. It has a modern room EQ capability compared to the rudimentary one in the Yammy. Also, the Pio has HDMI in/out and decodes the HD Audio formats. It allows you to use one cable (per input) for all your source signals and one cable to the TV. Keeps things neat. For example,
BluRay player; Set Top Box; Game Console; PC >4x HDMI> Pio receiver > 1x HDMI> TV.

The Klipsch speakers are rear ported. Keep the towers at least 1 ft. away from the front wall. The center speaker should not be pushed into a cubby space typical of media centers today (unless you have one of the open shelf types).

Look up speaker placement articles for surround sound. If you cannot place the surround speakers slight behind the main listening position (for example, if couch is pushed up against back wall), forgo the surrounds and just go with the L, C, R and subwoofer.

Thanks for all the good insight and tips.

You are correct about the model # on the Pioneer receiver, it's a VSX-820-K. I know it was manufactured in 2010, so it makes sense that it's more compatible with new technologies. I have room to leave the towers 1 ft. from the wall that the equipment is on. The center speaker can sit on an open shelf. The room that all this will go in is somewhat small. I don't think I have suitable space for the rears, so will likely forgo them. I guess I can add them later if I'm not satisfied with the sound. Based on what I've gathered from you enthusiasts, I'm just going to focus on finding a decent sub to add. Anything will be a huge improvement over the TV's speakers.

I like the price point of the HSU STF-2. It seems to be well- reviewed by the industry and users. Thanks for the recommendations.
