I rented it over the weekend and I prefer the story in this version to the previous version released early in 2000. The affects were really good and the soundtrack was awesome. I will most likely buy it once it goes on sale in year or two from now.

I'm going to have to disagree with you here. I thought the new story was very.....bad. :D

I was very disappointed with the new Robocop. There's just no character development IMO. I just didn't care for any of the characters here.

I liked it. This one was driven by the story, as though the telling of the story was the focus; whereas the first one felt more like a feeble storyline as a vehicle for gore porn. In the new one, I thought Gary Oldman's character did a great job with his internal conflict, and showed excellent character development. Furthermore, I disliked the profoundly dystopic fantasy of the original, while the newer movie felt much more plausible.

I think you actually described the intent of the first movie. It made no bones about it being a popcorn action flick, and that's why it is a classic.

Yeah, who woulda thunk that the original Robocop would be an accurate portrayal of modern-day Detroit :D

The original ain't classic enough to be in my collection. ;)

That's exactly the way I see it too.

The original is about as perfect as movies get. Great characters, swift pacing, extremely tight script, great sense of humor, dead on performances with perfect casting, great action, perfect dialogue, terrific music score. It's a damn near flawless movie. I don't know about the new one, but I don't have much interest in seeing it, and I doubt I ever will.

Rented via Redbox last night and it was not bad, but a very different movie than the original. I thought the acting and casting was about as good in this one as the last. I think Peter Weller made a better "cop" than the actor in the new one, but the new one wasn't bad either. The story is definitely more fleshed out and feels more well rounded, but lacks much of what made the original enjoyable, not unlike the 2012 Total Recall remake. At least this one was more interesting than that. I enjoyed this one and thought it was pretty well done, but it won't make my collection either.

"Plausible" and action movie don't really need to go together, and I don't see the need for the "serious" remakes of some of these popcorn action flicks.
