I ran a search for subs on CL and found this:

_ 4 - JBL GT1000 - 10 inch subwoofers sub woofers - ALL for ---->

Since it was the weekend of the 4th I made arrangements to come get them the following Monday after work. Work gets me about 40 miles closer to where they are located in Nashua, NH. When Monday came the seller mentioned that he had rec'd an offer for 3 subs shipped for $125. I told him we had made a deal for 4 subs for $125. He said he didn't know that he agreed to that price because he had a variety of ads with a variety of prices. I then said "then that's the end of that" and hung up.

Later it occurred to me that our email exchanging phone numbers would be tied to the original CL listing so I sent another email:

"This is the deal you agreed to and then renegged on. Be sure that I appreciate you saving me the $125 and 3 hours of my time to drive up and back. Thanks for breaking our agreement and your word."

To which he replied:

"If I get a better offer of course I'm going to sell them to some else. That doesn't even have to be explicitly stated, in my opinion. 80% of the people on CL when they make long term pick-up times don't even show up, so of course I'm still going to be actively selling them."

Funny how his failing memory suddenly wasn't an issue but the 80% likelihood of me not not showing was his motivation for ... I don't even know what to call it. I had other sh!t to do anyway. Here are the same subs still listed on eBay:

Don't be too harsh on him Alex, after all going to school in the short bus is no fun at all. In addition to obviously terrible memory he also seems to be very confused on definition of "firm price"

I'm sorry to hear your bad luck with this tosser. I don't understand how a person can go back on their word like that. It ain't right and it makes for bad feelings all around. On the plus side, you didn't waste a 3 hour drive to his place.

Tosser ... lol. I really feel he did me a favor. Work was slow so I was gonna cut out at noon to do this but I ended up using the time to go pick up a dresser that matches the armoire that I stuffed an equipment rack into. Check it out ... it was $52.

That's the pic from the ad. I gave the top a quick sanding and a denatured alcohol wipe and was completely blown away by the results. As it turned out I didn't get home til late and was exhausted the next day.

The bottom line on the subs is that I didn't need the hassle. It's not like they were extraordinary drivers to begin with but I figured an xmax of 7 mm might be alright for vehicles. Whatever. I'm gonna spend the money on strippers and coke so all is well. Not a lot of coke and kind of an old stripper but when life gives you a salad you have to turn it into chicken sh!t. Am I right or am I right? :D

Something tells me if you'd made the drive and that guy then told you that he wasn't going to honor the deal...that you'd still get your money's worth. :D

"Your honor, as I told the two nice police officers, I got the address from his CL ad confused with the ad requesting for a guy to show up and...well, we all know what happened."

Sorry that guy was such a douche. Commitments should be met, period. That said, congrats on the dresser - looks nice!

Speaking of subs from CL, do you guys think this one is a steal? The seller claims that it has developed a hum, but I'm thinking it could just be a ground loop, and his loss is my gain. If it turns out that the amp does have a problem, I can get a replacement (and even stronger) Bash amp from parts-express and still end up with a hell of a deal I think. But the drive is 7 hours round trip, so I'm not considering it lightly.

By the way Alex, that's a lovely dresser. Nice find! Are you going to refinish the top or just leave it sanded?

The way shellac works is that once you wipe it with denatured alcohol it puts the finish back into a solution state. So the 'wipe' removed the sanding marks and restored a sheen back to the top. That reminds me to check with Ben Moore about shellac. Sherwin Williams doesn't carry it.

If I made it all the way up to Nashua and the guy sprung that sh!t on me then I might have sprung some of my own sh!t on him. BTW, his street address is listed on the CL post and if anybody wants to Contact Seller for the eBay listing ... you know, to ask questions about the items, I'm sure he would be happy to answer. Just sayin'.

I'm pretty sure you can find shellac in hardware stores -- Lowe's, Home Depot, Ace... It won't be as durable as a varnish or poly though. The more you know ~★

Alex that sucks. First the cheetah, now this. No matter how good the deal or how bad I want to get rid of something, I've stopped using CL for both buying and selling. I've also stopped using eBay. It's not worth the hassle to me.
Hopefully you can find someone closer, or someone you know, that has something similar, or better. Good luck.

Oh, nice recovery by the way... :D

For all I know the original plate amp could have some EQ'ing built in that a Bash amp would obviously not have. So although the price is right, the ride and the risk are deal breakers.

Sorry to hear about your experience with that POS Alex. I hope you find a better deal somewhere else.
I wasn't really needin' subs when I agreed to buy those. Alright already, I had taken 1 of the 4 remaining Vicodin that I had out of an 8 pill prescription from a dental procedure back in like ... I don't know, last year sometime? At least I didn't end up with two thousand dollar receiver. :D

I didn't wrestle with that turd but I admit to poking it with a stick. Still not a good idea.

I have made a vow that my next physical altercation isn't stopping short of me biting somebody on the balls. As you can imagine that's not a proposition that I take lightly. So if we're arguing and I ask if you manscape, run. :D

I hope you're not suggesting doing this during nationally sanctioned Twister competition?
Then again, what you and Adam do in private.....:D

That whole CL thing worked out for the better, IMHO.
It also saved me time calling and reporting it to Cheryl :D

Strange you should say that. I, too, have a bottle of them left from the rotator cuff surgery. It seems like whenever I take one, I want to BUY SOMETHING. Really. The other day I was convinced I was going to buy a boat. A boat!

Regarding the POS on CL, as Albus Dumbledore said, "Sooner or later we must all face the choice between what is right and what is easy". It seems this guy has made his choice. Glad you got through unscathed.

A suggestion to help some of you avoid a panicked decision - just go ahead and do it when the argument starts. Don't wait until he asks that question to pull your pants up. :D

Cheryl doesn't know about that deal. Does that mean I'm predictable?

I made room in ManTown for that dresser. Telephone table hits the bricks yet again. Side 1 of Miles Davis is over and making that noise. I gotta get a move on. Wasting days off in the summer ... nope, not me.

The other day I was convinced I was going to buy a boat. A boat!

I'm pretty sure that's a red card offence...
