Refurbished vs New thoughts

But what does it MEAN for an item to be "refurbished"? Is it a unit that was defective, was returned and repaired? Was it a demo unit? Was it minor cosmetic damage? Was it a unit that didn't pass some quality control test and sent back to the factory? What is the most likely definition of refurbished?

Open box should be a simple return.
If returned with a problem, then it should be repaired.

Sometimes, there are B-Stock products sold that appear to be brand new.
They are direct sales that otherwise would conflict with their dealer network.
Manufacturer B-Stock can get you very good deals.

Refurbished means it was sent back to the factory for repair because someone complained the product was defective.

Whether the product was actually defective or not is debatable. And whether the factory deemed the product was defective or not is debatable. But it was assumed the product was defective to begin with. Thus, it got sent to the factory.

If the unit is purely a demo or a store return w/o any complaint that it was defective, it is called an "open box" item.

So, if the item is physically sent to the factory, it is refurbished. Otherwise, it is open box.

Also, warranty on refurb items is usually shorter than open box or demo units, which carry the new warranty.

Yes. I think Denon refurbished AVR is 1 year warranty while the open box AVR is 3 year warranty, which is same as new.
