I do have the AVR Denon X-2000. Can any of our members clarify a thing about the audio format. Suppose I play a Blu-ray/DVD movie which has multiple audio formats such as DTS, DTS-MA, Dolby Digital, Dolby True-HD, Stereo. The Denon supports all the above formats. Which format would the AVR select by default for play? Will it select the best format or it chooses randomly. Because sometimes I found despite the movie was encoded in Dolby digital, still the AVR preferred to select the 'Stereo' mode.

It depends on the disc.

Some companies believe the default should be whatever is most widely available.

DTS-HD MA is usually the default for DTS.

But I've seen discs where plain DD was the default, instead of Dolby TrueHD.

For discs with PCM & DD, the default is probably DD.

But, again, it depends on the disc.

IMO, the preferred method is to set the receiver to AUTO and let it decode the audio in its native format as sent by whatever device is sending it and the audio format that it was in. There is also often a function called "last used" that will use a decoding method that you chose to use last for a given input. If you leave it on AUTO all the time, that won't be a problem because it will then be AUTO the next time. Some AVRs allow you to preselect the type of decoding used for a given type of audio stream, basically setting your preference for what to use.

Dolby comes in many flavors, including Dolby stereo.

All the AVR is doing is decoding what the source device (your Blu-ray/DVD player) is sending to it. It cannot "select" a format from the source. As ADTG stated, it depends on the default format of the disc you're playing at the time. If you want to change the audio format, you'll need to navigate to the audio options for your DVD/Blu-Ray and specify a different format. The availability of some audio formats may also be limited by the capabilities of your source device.

The AVR won't select a format but the user CAN and that choice can be retained on a given input in most cases. This is also affected by the configuration of the source as well; most of the time it should be set to "bitstream" to allow the AVR to do the decoding.
