Yamaha RS-300 Overheats / Shuts Off

Well my 1.5 month old Yamaha R-S300 receiver either has a way to aggressive protection circuit, or can't handle a small 10'x11' room with 92 db peaks. Speakers are Energy RC-10's with a sensitivity of 85db and a minimum impedance of 4 ohms. I'm sitting roughly 4.5 feet away. What is driving me nuts is the amp should drive the load with no problem in this room. I should never really be exceeding 10 watts. My gut tells me Yamaha is using a way to aggressive protection circuit as there is little to no heat being generated from the vents.

The thing that pisses me off is I have to now send it back so whatever money I just saved went right out the window. I missed the 30 day window by a few weeks. So much for refurbished products. Lets hope my cd player will not crap out like this.

Did it ever work?

If you call them on it, they may swap it out for a new one. It can't hurt to try.

It has worked fine until today with no issues. It's been a great little receiver that has shown no signs of strain or overheating. I purchased it from accessories4less so I will give them a call tomorrow and see. But the website states 30 days.

It should last more than 1.5 months. I hope they make it right.

Bummer. My ~16 year old RX-V795 definitely has no problem driving my RC-10s. Hopefully A4L can help you out but like you said, you've exceeded the 30 days :/

Wonder why it would start acting up after 1.5 months... or was it always cutting out?

He said the unit wasn't running hot so I think he was right about the protective circuit getting too aggressive (=something went out of wack) resulting in premature tripping. It is hard to predict when an electronic component would fail except they typically would go for a long time after the first 100 hours or so of use.

Unless one uses the unit several hours a day and use most or all of the features, 30 days warranty is not just enough even for electronic gear. I do agree in this case he has a good argument to press for an exchange, maybe offer to pay for shipping as a last bargaining resort.

What did I always say about refurbished?

You could get lucky and not have issues.

But the odds of having issues is much greater than brand new (or open-box from Best Buy where you can bring back for warranty service w/o having to ship).

Every time someone buys refurbished AVR or pre-pro, I always think of Dirty Harry. Do you feel lucky? :D

Just contacted ac4l and it's a no go. The guy was rather unconcerned and said send it to yamaha for service it's past 30 days.

I can take it to a service center which is 60 miles away.

I will think twice about ac4l in the future as they just followed policy. But they could have exchanged the unit if they really wanted to. I will never by a refurbished unit again.

Sorry this happened to you.

You are only about the 5th person to denounce refurbished AVRs.

I think TLS Guy and I are the 2 biggest opponents of refurbished AVRs.

It seems quite a few members are proponents of refurbished AVR from A4L.

I have bought refurbished directly from Onkyo in the past and the support was excellent.
Having read this, I think I would have to buy directly from the manufacturer.

I was hoping the odds would be in my favor with it being a stereo unit. Guess not. Funny thing is I was thinking of your exact situation I read about when I pulled the trigger on these items. I probably should have paid more attention.:D Well the cd player still works just fine.

Well I let the receiver sit powered off overnight. I have been playing the Led Zeppelin remasters with no issues. We shall see what happens after a couple more hours at a decent volume. 85-90db.

Why do you feel jilted? In your opinion, at what point after the 30 period should they abide by the published policy and stop making exceptions?

A company can abide by their published policies.
There are companies who understand when and when not to do that.

I would argue that it would have been better for their business to have taken the return or offered an exchange.

Whoever said I felt jilted. I stated I would think twice. Meaning I will keep there
policy's in mind if I order from them again. Especially speakers which are much lower risk. Unlike electronics.

Knowing the device is a refurb and the return policy is limiting, wouldn't the onus be on the OP to have thoroughly vetted the product in a timely manner?

Wow. You are way overthinking this. On top of not understanding my post and taking it out of context.

So put it through the ringer in the first 29 days after arrival? I'm awaiting delivery on an Onkyo TX NR929 refurb from Acc4less.

Fair enough. I apologize for derailing the thread.

I would say so, as long as you don't intentionally (using 2 ohm resistor for speaker) or inadvertently (unknowing run tough speakers full range at party volume) break it :). I had to return a receiver to them, but, I was within the 30 period and the RMA/exchange process was painless.
