I posted my thoughts in the "what are you watching tonight" thread because it was good not great. The actual story was good, but the movie's portrayal of it wasn't that interesting.

I think some of the lesser parts of the movie derive from the nature of the story. I read the book and IT was very episodic, as was the movie. There were over 200 monuments men and the movie picked anecdotes from among those 200 guys, while trying to have a small ensemble cast of celebrities. It must have been difficult to try to boil down all these incidents into a 2 hour movie and have a consistent set of characters. They tried and some parts were more successful than others.

We liked it but wanted more of the story. The wife said it needed to be a 3+ hour movie.

There were apparently over 320 Monuments men, so yes making it into a single story was likely difficult, but the movie still didn't quite provide enough info. It could have been longer or it could have been more focused. They could have compressed the backgrounds/introductions of the main characters a bit, since they didn't really flesh them out enough to be useful.
