Oh, come on, I am hardly even in the same universe with that level of insanity. :D

But really, with 4TB HDs these days, I just don't see the need for crazy HTPC/NAS systems, especially with XBMC and the fact that most of my HD movies are now under 10GB each. :D
Sorry, You guys did not in fact share a cell. Reorx was in a super secure facility for extremely awesome people :) Like ones who buy 1/2 a mil SAN for 4k :)

I bet building a robust 130TB server (you know, chassis, xeon cpus, ecc ram) even with 4tb sata drives would still cost over 4k, but to be honest would consume MUCH less electricity

For the vmware servers I would stretch the budget and try to get dl380 g8's. They will be on the vmware hcl for longer. For the windows server a g5-g7 would be fine. Newer would be better so I can Transcode movies on the fly better.

I am a storage/vmware engineer. I am used to playing with multi-million dollar equipment.

When I get closer to getting this better organized I will post my own thread.

Are there any mature kaleidoscape like programs out there for someone who wants to do their own?

Thanks.

I wish I could could call myself a storage engineer, but alas i am experienced only with NetApp, not with EMC. Plus few smaller systems like older hp storageworks and eva. Plus few smb Nas boxes.

At home I'm running 12tb raw/7tb net zfs in config similar to raid 50
Still got plenty of space. All completely silent and low power.

As for Kaleidescape like programs, there aren't. Only xbmc and plex. The rest is lagging badly.

Ever since I got hooked on XBMC and file compression (Handbrake), I took my NAS apart and just divided the 2TB HDDs into 3 HTPCs (2 HTPCs in my HT room, 1 HTPC in my family room, each HTPC with 12TB).

I have about 800 HD movies and I've only used about 3.2TB. If I add 7 movies per month x 12 months x 25 years, it would be another 2,100 movies and each of my 3 HTPCs would still not be full. :D

And that is with 2TB HDDs. If I use 4TB HDDs, it would be another 50 years.

Well, okay, maybe the HDDs won't last that long physically. :D

So thanks to you (& XBMC), my days of the big NAS is over.
