I have 2 sets of Ascend Acoustics HTM-200. Very happy with them- I use a sub with them.
Good luck

Going to take a look at some used Cambridge M60's tomorrow. They're in my price range so if they sound great I'll just grab those.

Went to Fry's. They were out of the Pioneers and proceeded to try to sell me some Bose wall speakers. Safe to say I won't be going there again. Not a great place to demo at least here in Dallas.
That's a shame. Fry's is awesome, you are lucky to have one near you. You shouldn't completely write them off from 1 idiot employee.

Fry's audio departments tend to be not the best, and that's coming from Fry's home town. I live right up the street from what is currently their headquarters. Frys is now one of those places where you get a great deal but you're better off knowing exactly what you want when you walk in.

Yup, the deals are there for sure. I never really talk to the employees, so no problem for me.

I really like that it is basically a Best Buy and an old-school Radio Shack combined.

Would recommend you consider these psb"s...considering your stated preference in music and tonal qualities!

I have a pair of original Alphas which are very good speaker in their own right. Would love to do a comparison of their old and new.

These $150 beauties knocked our socks off at the first Oregon GTG ... http://www.amazon.com/Yamaha-NS-6490-Bookshelf-Speakers-Finish/dp/B00018Q4GA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1400605304&sr=8-1&keywords=yamaha+speaker

Read about them here ... http://forums.audioholics.com/forums/loudspeakers/52090-budget-bookshelf-speaker-shootout-2009-a.html

I'd normally offer up the Pioneers that Dennis Murphy optimizes, but I don't think he does the monitors any longer...just the towers. Good luck with your search.

I wound up getting a used pair of Cambridge M60's. They're not unbelievable but at the price I paid, ($100 pr) I'm a happy camper. Not quite as accurate as the Paradigms I had before but they sound warmer, which I almost prefer. Less fatigue.
