Bose vs. Harman Kardon

Hello-

I am interested in purchasing a speaker system as a gift. I am looking at the HKTS60 and the Bose Acoustimass 10 as my top picks. Does anyone have any experience or opinions on either of these products? Is there another set-up I should be looking at?

Some info:
Current set up: 30+ year old Bose 301s (that still crank!) combined with Cambridge SW center channel and surround. Sounds great, but looking for a slight upgrade.

Budget: ~$1000

Room: Future home theater. ~15 x 20 basement room.

Thanks in advance for any info and advice.

You can do better than both those brands at your budget. If you're set on tiny speakers, I would check out Mirage Nanosats and Orb Audio. If you can go bigger, a ton of options open up.

Those Bose systems shouldn't be compared to your 301's. The 301's were good.

I would not get the Bose and I have owned several pairs. There are better options out there.

Is ther any specific reasopn you're going for a pre-packaged system as opposed to separates? You can get a hackuva lot more bang for your buck if you just buy five good matching speakers and a sub from a different manufaturer.

Thanks for the advice & product information, everyone. I am not set on tiny speakers, I could definitely move up in size and I am not against separates. The only place I don't have much flex is my budget. So I should look for a good sub (any brand) and a good set of 5 speakers (all from same mfr?) Is this still doable? Any recoms?

For timbre (tone color) matching, the front 3 would be the main focus - you can use
a different brand/series for surrounds - matching the surrounds would mainly be more
beneficial (recommended), if doing a lot of surround music

Look at the Boston A25 (Boston makes some good stuff)

Another option that I do prefer over Bose, is Infinity

If you've got a local Frys Electronics, I would go there. They usually have Infinity, JBL, Polk Audio and Pioneer speakers on sale.
