First Post - Could Use Some Advice

I've read some of the forum posts here and a couple other forums and have decided this is the place to get some solid advice.

I live in a fairly small home in NM. Our living room is a modest 200 sq. ft.

My current receiver is a Yamaha RX-V2092 I bought when it hit the stores in the 90s.

Speakers are:

Koss M80-Plus used as front presence 7.5 ft. off the floor.
Cerwin Vega MX-250s with recently rebuilt woofers
Bose 301 Series IIs sitting on top of the CVs
Bose VCS-10 center 6 in. off the floor
Acoustic Research AR-15 rears.

I am constantly amazed at the audio quality of this system. I really don't want to update or change anything. However, fate has intervened and my beloved receiver is now having issues. It has recently started shutting down after being on for some time. There's no issue with it turning back on. Usually, when it shuts down and I turn it back on, it stays on until we turn it off - sometimes a couple hours. Other times, it shuts down a couple times - 10 or more minutes apart before it stays on.

I've relegated myself to the fact that I've gotten the value from my 2092, and it's time to replace it. That's my problem. I live in a small community on the eastern high desert, there's no slipping over to the audio store to check out the offerings.

I don't want to give up any of the performance I have. Unfortunately, working online mostly, I'm having trouble comparing specs from my 2092 with the newest crop of offerings.

I want to stay with Yamaha. I'm an old guy and have had a lot of audio/video gear from a number of different brands and have never even come close to what this 2092 does for me. Only thing I'd like added is HDMI.

I'm hoping someone can help me look in the right direction.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry, thought I added that. For the right replacement, around $1K isn't out of the question. I obviously don't want to spend more than I need to, but I'm not looking for a $100 solution - that would be nice, but unrealistic I think.

Thanks.

Thank you RoJo. I'll check it out.

My fault - I didn't mention I have a Marantz 6300 phono. The A710 doesn't have a phono input.

Ah. Well, you could get a separate phono preamp and save some money. Or I'm sure A4L has something. They've got lots of Yamaha receivers. I'll help you look.

Edit: Here you go. The RX-A1010 has a phono input.

Good suggestion. I'll certainly keep that one on the list.

Thanks.

Any opinions on the RX-A1030.??. New at $820 from an authorized dealer seems pretty good to me.

I checked out some of the refurbs but decided again them in this case. The difference in price doesn't justify one year verses a three year warranty to me.

Thanks.

Looks pretty good, especially at that price. Still looking but it's certainly a contender.

Thanks.

You know, I might wonder if heat is causing the problem. After a number of years, dust will settle through and on the vents of your receiver. Before I spent $1k to replace it, I might first try a $5 can of compressed air to blow out what I could. You might even remove the top cover, then clean.

After that, I might try putting a little floor fan to blow over it and see if the problem disappears. If so, consider how your receiver is positioned... inside a cabinet, over/under some other component, etc. Perhaps repositioning, and/or the addition of a small fan for the cost of a Big Mac Combo would fix the problem.

Exactly what I thought when it first happened. I'm a computer tech so I have tools and compressed air on hand. When the problem first occurred, I pulled the cabinet off and blew, brushed and blew it out again. A little dust, but nothing I would have considered a problem.

Haven't tried a fan over it yet. Not a bad idea. I have biscuit fans on the shelf. Think I'll fashion some cardboard to hold one so it will blow into the vents on top and see if I leave it on today, it stays on. As to how it's positioned, it's on an open shelf - see photo - that allows good airflow. I do have some dvds on one side but nothing that would cause this issue.

Crapped out on me again last night twice.

Thanks for the thought. I'll post how it goes.

Ordered the RX-A1030.

BTW, I just noticed I posted the bookshelf speakers at our place in Tucson, not the floor standing ARs here. The ones here, that I use for rears are AR48s floor standing speakers. Sorry for the screw-ups.

Thanks for the input gang.
