GE Forcefield 5 or SVS PB13 Ultra? 2k budget

Hey everyone,

I'm a newbie on this site, as I just recently built my first dedicated home theater. As of now, I have an all GoldenEar setup, but am missing a powerful sub. With a $2k (ish) budget, am I better of going with the SVS PB13 ultra? Or sticking with GE and getting 2 Forcefield 5 subs? Ideally, I would put one sub on either side of the center channel facing the listener if i went with 2 subs. With my current basement setup, it would be difficult to put one one either side of the room to the listeners side.

FYI: my basement is medium sized, I'd say about 16 x 20. My current equipment are as follows:

Triton 2's for mains
SuperSat 60 for surrounds
SuperCenter XL for center
Integra DHC 80.3
Emotiva XPA-2 for mains, XPA-5 for surrounds/center
Panamax M7500 Pro
PS4

Any help/feedback would really be appreciated!

No brainer, get the SVS. Proven track record and a beast to boot.

What do you feel about diy kits? For that budget you could build a pair of nice reference Dayton Audio 18s, add a 1000+ watt rms amp, and have money left over for a really nice veneer.

Re: your two choices, I haven't heard anything about the ge, but I've seen no svs owners who weren't thrilled with their purchase. If diy isn't your thing, then svs is what I would choose between those two. There's also a Salk sub with a Rhythmik driver I would put at the top of the short list.

Yeah I'm not exactly experienced in the DIY home theater world. From everything I've heard, svs is a killer sub. But when is too much power overkill? For instance, the pb13 plus vs pb13 ultra... I know the ultra will hit the low's with more ease and grace, but is it really that obvious? It's a $600 increase to bump up to the ultra.

Always go for the best sub you can in regards to HT. The SVS will be able to pressurize a large room and that's what you want. Wanna save a little money look at the rythmik fv15hp.

Oh, no one is ever experienced until they are. These parts-express kits are pretty well explained and require very few wood working tools or skills -- just some wood glue, clamps, and a hole saw for mounting a banana plug terminal. A pair of these and a strong amp should outperform even the most impressive 12" svs sub, though how pretty they end up depends on the finish you choose and your patience applying it.

Incidentally, this is the Salk sub I was thinking of earlier.

Gospel!
First I got the FV15HP. Loved it.
Then added the PB13U for a second sub. One in front of the room, one in back.
Can DEFINATELY tell a difference. Even my wife, who normally doesn't care or hear a difference, says it sounds better with both subs.

So, "When is too much power overkill"? I don't know, but these 2 subs in the same room are not. It's a safe bet one PB13U is not "too much" for your room.

I would totally go with 2 Forcefield 5's...
for 3 reasons, and 3 reasons only:

1.) It's a frickin' cool name for a sub...

2.) Everyone at StarFleet knows that having a 10 Forcefield is much better than having a 5 Forcefield...

3.) It's a frickin' cool name for a sub...
