Any advantages of spdif over hdmi?

If I have HDMI, do I need to use spdif? Would I gain anything?
Both are digitall connections anyways.

None that I know of. I know there has been talk of increased Jitter with HDMI but I don't think it went anywhere. SP/DIF is bandwidth limited if you care about running 24/192.

The only thing I can think of is that being optical, it will be less susceptible to interference. Otherwise HDMI is superior in every possible way.

Actually, you would lose the ability to use the lossless codecs if you used SPDIF connections because all lossless codecs get transmitted via hdmi only.

Very true. No DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD via SPDIF.

There can only be one - HDMI. :D

...and in the darkness bind them.

So you have to connect HDMI, then you can also connect SPDIF and see which one you like better for LPCM.

Alright so HDMI it is.

I have an issue,
How do I bypass the processing in media monkey or vlc when playing mp3 or flac?
When it comes to movies with DTS or Dolby , I am able to bypass the processing and let my receiver do it using HDMI or spdif.
for music I searched around and tried different suggestions, I am unable to stream to my receiver (Marantz 7005)

Default, what comes with vlc and with media monkey.

For videos am fine with how vlc works. for movies which have AAC, I use WMP with FFD Show and matroska splitter. Music is what I am struggling to stream directly. I use only media monkey for that. Tried others, come back to media monkey eventually.

Get the wasapi plug in for MM and run that so all your formats get pushed/passed thru to the avr. ASIO Output Plugins - MediaMonkey Wiki

I had tried the built in plugins earlier, but wasn't aware that it needed to be configured. I enabled exclusive mode and works now.

I usually check if the volume control in the pc is disabled or has no effect, to infer that the processing is done by the receiver. Is there any other way to figure out the same?

if your running the latest version of MM, if you just disable the volume in
MM you should be fine.
