I am looking to change from a dedicated 2 channel system to an AVR. If this unit's focus is music only, which brand out there has the better quality audio side? I will be running a 2.1 or 2.2 music set up to take advantage of DVD and Blue ray audio formats.
Yamaha?
Marantz?

If you were to pit equivalent priced models from both Yamaha and Marantz side in a blind listening test, you would not be able to tell them apart from a sound quality perspective until you drive them into clipping my playing them with the volume set too high.

Use an analog source and it won't matter :) I don't totally agree that you wouldn't be able to tell the difference in sound between Marantz and Yamaha because they frequently use very different DACs and implementation, however I do feel that this difference is not a deciding factor. Get the one that has the most power and the features you want in your price range.

For 2.2 music, the only difference will be Audyssey XT32 + dual Sub EQ + DEQ vs. other equivalents from other brands.

For example, Yamaha and Anthem have single sub EQ, and they don't have DEQ.

In 2.0 PD I think all the major brands will sound as good.

Thanks guys. I haven't decided if I want to do this yet. AcuDef, gave me the idea and it's stuck in my head. I sold off most of my Emotiva gear and not sure what direction I want to take.

If you have local dealers and lots of time and patience, try out [Audyssey XT32 + dual Sub EQ + DEQ] vs [Anthem ARC + Dolby Volume] vs [YPAO + Adaptive Dynamic Volume Compression] vs Pioneer MCACC.
