If I have a 3.0 channel setup should I use the stereo setting ?

I recently bought my first AV setup a receiver Yamaha RX-V375 and Pioneer SP-BS22-LR Bookshelf Loudspeakers and a Pioneer SP-C22 Center Channel Speaker cause I think the dialog was kinda weak and that's why I bought a center speaker.

Should I set my receiver to run stereo over all three speakers, or Dolby digital what would be my best option ?

By the way is having 3.0 setup like a odd setup ?

I get plenty bass from my bookshelf's that's why I don't see the benefit of getting sub-woofer.

But adding sub-woofer would that mean that all the bass would output to the sub-woofer only and would allow the bookshelf's more head room for other types sounds ?

thanks

You mean multi-channel stereo? I wouldn't. I would just use a direct, or Dolby/DTS mode so it routes the appropriate content to each speaker.

Adding a subwoofer allows you to get the LFE track from movie soundtracks and it also allows you to cross the bookshelves and center over at a certain frequency so they aren't overdriven, which will allow you to play loudly, more cleanly, and will provide you with better overall bass response even at lower volumes.

It might be a little different on the Yamaha but there should be a setting where you bypass all DSP processing and you just get whatever the signal is. Could be source direct, direct, or something of that nature.

Pure direct on Yamaha I believe.

Go into the speaker menu, turn off any surround speakers and the sub that might be configured. By doing that you can have stereo for stereo material (no DSP) and 3.0 for use with multichannel audio (DD, dts, etc...)
