Trouble with Denon AVR-2313

I am having a problem with my Denon AVR-2313 when I go to turn on any periphery like my Blu-ray player or iPod. The receiver will automatically turn itself off and then turn back on initially and then sporadically while those items are on. Any ideas? I tried to reset the microprocessor, but to no avail.

Are you using powered HDMI cables, like Redmere, by any chance?

No, I am using normal HDMI cable. This just started to occur the last month or so. I have had the system for about 9 months.

Since a reset does not solve the problem and the problem occurs with more than 1 peripheral, then that Denon needs to go in for warranty repair. It is a strange fault, but the problem has to be on the HDMI board. At a guess I would say that the HDMI board has an intermittent fault that is drawing excess current and causing shut down. I would make sure you return it in the warranty period. That fault will get worse and repair will exceed the cost of the unit, so it it will head to the recycling center.

Unfortunately the lower end Denons are on the list for excess HDMI problems.

Essentially we are now at the point where you really have to think twice before buying a receiver below the $1000 price area.

Thanks for the help. Spoke with Denon. Under warranty.

Go into the Setup Menu, Video, HDMI Setup and look for HDMI Control. Turn it off and use an optical cable to send audio from the TV to the receiver, if you use the TV's tuner. If you don't and have cable, satellite or U-Verse, it doesn't matter and isn't needed, anyway.

If HDMI Control is turned off in the receiver, look in the TV's setup menu for it. It may be called CEC. ALso, look at the bottom of the list for Power Off Control- turn that off.

This is part of CEC, which is one of many problems that we'll have to experience if we choose to let HDMI live. Personally, I think they should kill it and start over, without all of the BS that they're trying to force us to put up with.

This isn't a lower end model- it's part of the CI series. It is, however, from last year and they have slimmed down the lineup. It may not be a Denon problem, it's an HDMI problem- the TV input is changed and it tells the receiver to switch on/off or to change the input.

FWIW, I have sent a few pieces to a regional service center and the tech told me that most of the well-known manufacturers use the same HDMI boards. I don't know how the setup/software affects how well they work, but this problem isn't specific to Denon. Onkyo had serious HDMI problems a couple of years ago, to the point that a lot of dealers jumped ship.

I worked with someone who's a service tech at a local stereo store. Back in the mid-'80s, he started saying "It's all crap!" and to a large degree, I had to agree. The late-'80s was the beginning of some really bad audio equipment and I think the manufacturers really need to look at what they're offering and a critical eye.
