No sound from Onkyo 709

I have an onkyo 709 receiver and when I went to turn it on today I was getting video but no sound on any of the inputs. I have tried to do a factory reset, but still no sound. I don't even get any sound when going to the speaker level calibration screen. I checked all of the connections and everything was fine. I am out of the warranty period but since I bought it with an American Express card I get an additional year through them so i am still covered. The problem is that I have to find a place that will service it or at least give me an estimate to send to American Express. Does anyone know of any good service locations for an Onkyo receiver in North Carolina? Specifically in the Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill area?

That receiver is not worth repair. Onkyblow have far too high a failure rate. That receiver is total junk. Onkyo have admitted it was built with substandard parts and in the UK they were forced to recall them.

It is junk now and if you fix it, it will still be jink.

Bite the bullet and replace it.

Well I would not be the one paying for the repair and if the repair cost is high enough, or the repair shop says that it can not be repaired American express will just pay me what I initially paid for the receiver, in which case I would get a different brand receiver. I just need to find a repair shop in the area that I can take it to. I have had no luck looking online though so I was hoping someone here may have an idea of where I can take it.

Hi Takalah Might be an HDMI issue call Onkyo they will repair it for free. I have had Onkyo's with no problem. PM me if you need more info.

I thought that they won't touch it since it is out of their 2 year warranty? Have people been able to get them to repair them even after that timeframe? I checked the recall website and my serial number was not part of their recall.

Yes they will repair it if it's HDMI related, even if the warranty is expired. Contact them they should be able to help you.

Finding independent repair shops is very difficult. Most have shut down. In the Twin Cities many independent techs I knew had to pawn their test ear, just to keep food on the table.

I would get an estimate from an Onkyo repair center. They will do service out of warranty. Get a quote from them. However be aware an estimate is just that. Finding the fault is always the toughest and most expensive part of just about any service. Fixing the problem is generally the easy part. So an estimate has to be taken with a grain of salt. When I do fix things, I never give an estimate. It is usually impossible, especially with really complex gear.

If you do get it fixed drop it like a hot potato and get something else.

Even if they won't repair it free of charge, they should be able to get you the name of a service facility who might be able to furnish the information you need for AE. If nothing else, you can start a paper trail to furnish to American Express to help in substantiating your claim and problerms.

In any case, Onkyo can probably be more help than we could.

but, be aware that you will probably have to foot the bill for an estimate up front and hope AE reimburses you for it.

So I have an update on the receiver. I tried to turn it on today and had the same thing, but I left it on for a while and the sound started to play just fine as if there were no problems. I turned it off and let it cool down and had the same thing happen where there was no sound until it warmed up. I looked around and apparently a lot of other people have the same issue with these and it eventually gets worse.

From what I read on forums it's HDMI related 9 of of 10. Can you tell us or show a pic of how much air space you give the 709 on your shelf. It's always a great Idea to have a laptop fan on top with hot air flowing out. I also read if you keep your ohm at 4 it keeps the heat down. This is what I did with the 707 and never had problems.
