Does setting an AVR's amps to the 4 ohm settings, engage some kind of current limiting?

In typical schemes found in mid range AVRs, the 4 ohm settings are just transformer tap settings. As such, it just lower the voltage limit and therefore limits the maximum available current at a given impedance.
