SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Mozilla, the company behind the Firefox Internet browser, will start selling ads as it tries to grab a larger slice of the fast-expanding online advertising market.

The company said in a blog posting on Tuesday that it has reached out to potential corporate sponsors about its fledgling "Directory Tiles" program, targeted at first-time users.

Novice Firefox users now see nine blank tiles when they open up the browser, which fill in over time with their most-visited or recently visited websites. Now, Mozilla intends to display the most popular sites by location, as well as sponsored websites that will be clearly labeled as such.
Not terrible I suppose, but if I wanted to use an Opera style interface, I would use Opera... Not that I have a problem with Opera, but FF has been my go-to app.

FF+Ad block = awesome too, but these will be embedded in the actual software. Once they do it, don't be surprised if other browsers follow suit.

I like Opera better than Chrome.

Where are these tiles? Are they if you use the default homepage?

That blows. I bet someone will find a way to defeat the ads.

Doubt this will succeed. Not that I'm among them, but I can imagine the problems caused when a spouse sees a display of most-visited or recently visited websites whenever the browser is opened. If they do something like this, I suspect it will be very easily turned off. Maybe that's why they say "Novice" users will see it.
