So I was poking around with my machine this morning before leaving for work. I had the machine on all night in the cabinet. In the hardware section of OpenElec... it show my CPU temp at 102 fahrenheit and my GPU as 32 celsius.

Are the temps okay? They seem high to me considering the box was doing nothing. It was 68 in the house.

those temps are perfectly fine for idle temps.

102F = 38.8889C

during heavy load you'll easily double them.

Those temps seem fine. I hear that you don't want to be much higher than 70c. I cant say I looked into that a whole lot, but it sounds right to me. Keep in mind that the computer will do at least SOME to protect itself from melting down.

Just to brag a little, here is a pic of my temps after running the slightly overclocked (3.4 clocked to 3.8) CPU at 100% for about 5 hours.

I was pretty happy with that since the temps move up or down 1 degree for pretty much the entire run. Also my fans which are controlled by the CPU fan port on the motherboard never even throttled up at all. Nice and quiet :)

Thanks guys. I went with the stock cooler instead of the really super cool once I wanted to get. I don't imagine the box will ever be running all the hard. Even pushing a large ISO shouldn't be huge burden. I guess though if i add more drives and add in some tuner cards, it'll be a different story. It's my understanding that tuner cards can run pretty hot on their own. I'll keep an eye on things.

Here at work with minimal load on my machine, my temps are 40C for the cpu and 49C on the gpu :)

This is the cooler I wanted to get, but BoredSysAdmin talked me out of it because it was total overkill for what I was doing.

SilverStone Technology Co., Ltd.- AR02

If I start adding stuff, I just plop that bad boy in. I don't think I have the balls to do water cooling. Something about having flowing water in computer case just seems wrong to me and with me... it will spring a leak... short out my box... catch my cabinet on fire and burn my house down.

That seems counter intuitive. A box full if water catching on fire :p

Just use a dielectric fluid like Fluorinert. :)

Although I know you won't do that, in case you do...make sure to check compatibility of the fluid with the materials you're using for the cooling system.

Your temps are perfectly fine chris. No need to even think about it.
