Hi,
I just bought an RX-3030 and I've connected HDMI cords to cable box (AV-1), DVD (AV-2), and XBOX (AV-3). I have connected the HDMI (out1) to my Samsung HDTV that's about 4 years old.
The cable box is working perfectly but I'm having 2 main problems:
1.] The DVD player has picture but no sound. Do I have to add an audio cable in addition to the HDMI?
2.] The other issue is the XBOX. Whenever I switch to AV-3, the screen says "mode not supported". I appreciate any help given.

You should tell people the exact models of everything.

With your DVD player, it may be that it is set up to only output video via HDMI, and not audio. If that is the case, you will want to go into its settings and change that. I recommend looking at your manual and then bringing up the settings menu on the DVD player to check on that.

Sorry, new to this. The TV is a Samsung HL61A750A1F. The DVD player is a Sony DVP-CX995V

With the sound problem, is it with everything on the DVD player, or just some types of discs? On pages 18, 22, & 25 of the manual, it states that it will not send audio of SACD discs via HDMI.

On page 27, you tell it which output you are using for audio when hooked up to a receiver. If that is set wrong, you will likely get no audio via HDMI. (You will need to start the process on page 26, but the issue is discussed on page 27.) You will also want to continue on to the next page, and I suggest having your DVD player NOT do any conversion, but to send each format, just as it is, to the receiver to decode.

You will also want to look at pages 81 & 82. You almost certainly have a setting wrong in the player, as your player can shut off the digital audio output.

For the Xbox, you will need to ask someone else, though I would not be surprised if it is also an improper setting in it. But I am not familiar with Xboxes. If no one else responds to this thread dealing with that within 2 days, start another thread asking about the Xbox.

I have the RX-A3000, so things may be a little different.

1. When you have the input for DVD connected, press "Option", and check to ensure the Audio Select is set to "Auto". You could try "HDMI". I'm not familiar with your DVD player, but you may want to check its setting for audio-out options. You could try to swap with a known good HDMI cable. Is your cable box using HDMI?
Worst case, it may be HDCP handshake issues.

2. How is your Xbox connected?

After a little bit of messing with the DVD settings and some very valuable information from you guys, I did get the DVD to produce sound. Thank you both for your help. But I'm at a loss with the XBOX. It's connected using an HDMI cable to AV-3 as described above (and the way the manual says it can be connected) but, unlike the DVD, I don't know of any setting changes that you can make to the XBOX. If at all possible I'd like to use the HDMI cable in lieu of coaxial. I did change the settings on the XBOX to 1080p and tried to hook it directly to the TV but get the same "mode not supported" message.
