HDMI for audio only

So my old receiver died and I was looking at purchasing a new one specifically the budget Onkyo TX-SR313 model. I am very interested in watching blurays from my PS3 with the enhanced HDMI audio for better quality but I still have my faithful CRT (with component in connections) and have no plans to buy a HDTV. Is it possible to use both HDMI for audio to the receiver and use component plugged directly into the TV? Or do HDMI receivers require another HDMI cable to be plugged into the HDMI output on the receiver to hear audio. Is there anyway this can be done? Alternately, I have an LCD monitor with a DVI port and a HDMI to DVI adaptor would that work? I just want to experience HD audio I am open to all ideas except the purchase of a new TV.

If you want blu-ray codecs you need an hdmi capable TV.

Hi. I'm going to disagree with my friend above. :) Well, potentially.

Receivers do not require you to use an HDMI output in order to get audio from an HDMI input, so you could use HDMI for audio only.

I don't know if all PS3's have this (mine is two generations old), but you can likely select in the PS3 menu the option to output audio over HDMI and video through component. I recommend that you check that out first in your PS3 menu to see if you can do that before buying a new receiver. If it can do that, then you should be good to go.

I think yes.

AFAIK, you can output both a digital (HDMI to the AVR) and analog (Component to the TV) signal simultaneously.
