What is special about the 2-channel SACDs? What makes them "super audio" if they are only two channels?

It's supposed to be a higher fidelity version of the music. The format can store more information, and therefore can hold a higher fidelity copy on the same size disc as a CD.

Ugh. I would not be happy if I learned this only after buying a 2-channel SACD. The whole reason I buy them is to listen in multi-channel. Now I know to make sure to check. Thanks.

Not that you asked for suggestions :), but for multichannel SACDS, I'm impressed by Dire Straights: Brothers in Arms, and Depeche Mode: Violator.

The Dire Straights album is still easy to find, including on Amazon. If you like that album, it's well worth the $20-$25.

That Depeche Mode album, though, is not easy to find for a reasonable price. The SACD version was an import. I managed to get it before stores ran out, and now I only see it being sold for well over $100. It's good...but it's not that good. However, you can get a CD/DVD version from Amazon for about $20 that has a DTS surround track on it that's supposed to be very good.

Except that these two discs are definitely multichannel.
Context, my friend. Take it in context of the previous three or so posts in this thread, not these two in particular CDs.

The fact of the matter is simply that most SACDs ARE two channel.

True since most of the ones that came out in the first year or two were stereo only. Most of the ones I own are not stereo only though.

Brothers In Arms is definitley one of my favorites, in either 2ch or 5.1. Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here are both still relatively easy to get and totally worth it also.
