Denon AVR-33xx/43xx quality issues?

Yeah, but then you have other stores like Walmart that take things back with no questions asked.
Sure they take it back. But if they ship every AVR to get refurbished, we wouldn't see any open box items at Walmart.

I would think some management guy at Walmart would have someone in the electronics department confirm. Walmart seems pretty smart. I don't see them losing too much money. I don't think. I've seen open box items at Walmart. They are open box, not refurbished.

Well, bottom line is that I have never had a problem with a refurb unit.

On the other hand, I have had problems with new stuff.

Any way you look at it, it's a crap shoot. Some of us seem to be luckier than others.

Yeah, never know in life.

Always two sides to every story.

I am not so sure.

If a customer says it is defective, then I think it goes back to the manufacturer for a refund. An open box sale of a product that was reported defective is really bad business and might be unlawful, even if you cannot verify the defect.

And then you have giant etailers like Amazon accepting "defective" returns that are user error. I've read disgruntled reviews on amazon where the person was obviously clued out as to operating their electronics purchase and claimed it was defective and returned it. Does Amazon test every single item being returned to see what's going on? Every single brand and feature knowledge? How about New Egg? Jr? Crutchfield, etc?

BTW, I just bought a refurbished Denon/Boston Acoustics HTIB for my parents that really impressed me. Over 60% off retail.

I have a refurbished Denon AVR-X4000 on the way from accessories4less. Paid $799 shipped, which seems to be about $200 cheaper than the cheapest new units I've seen. Not an insignificant amount. And if I'd wanted to, I could have opted for an extended warranty for short money and still come out ahead (see below, pasted from the A4L website). However, I'm banking on the unit performing flawlessly out of the box. If not, I've got at least a 1-yr warranty to cover me.

I'll be sure to update this thread once I get the receiver. :)

Agree. All you can do is play the game with the best odds. It's interesting what affects the odds, or at least what people perceive as contributing. I used to take visiting engineers/mgrs from China shopping. They wanted Iphones, Levi jeans and Coach pocketbooks. They were absolutely convinced that these companies, (all "Made in China"), sent the highest quality products to the US, and sold the lowest quality inside China. They were also amazed when we went in the Apple store, bought an Iphone and left without turning it on to verify it worked. They said they would NEVER buy any kind of electronics at home without turning it on and "testing" it in the store.

This was all very interesting to me, as these were professionals, and knew for a fact that the geography of the customer made absolutely no difference to us on our mfg lines. In fact, the mfg operators don't even know who the customer will be. All customer/shipping labels are applied in the warehouse after the product has left the mfg line.

Convenience has more value to me as I get older. It is why I like to buy new, from a brick & morter store if possible, with an extended warranty. If there is a problem, I like to simply call and have them send somebody out to handle it. Lazy... yes. More expensive... yes. Convenient... yes. (That said, I have Aperion, Rythmik, Emotiva and Denon... all bought online due to advice on this forum.) So far, so good.

Update - got the receiver and everything seems to be functioning normally. I did hit one snag with trying to do a firmware update, but that might have been operator error. So far so good...

I've had my AVR3313 (replaced a 2803 that served well for years) and the only glitches have been a rare inability to pass DVR video ... input set, but blank screen on TV. A cycle of the Rx's power fixes the problem. Otherwise excellent sound, good power, solid features.
