We had about 25 people over for thanksgiving and my parlor 2.2 system was playing the entire time {at a low level}.
A friend of mine brought his niece and her husband that are in from out of town {90% of his relatives that were flying in had cancelled flights, so we invited them over instead of them cooking for 4 people}, his nephew in law is about 28 years old and said he has a pair of CM9's that he bought at best buy for under $2K {scratch and dent sale}, a Cambridge Topaz {Im not familiar with he says it is a 340w stereo receiver, also c-stock}, and he has a dvd player as his cd player {denon 900} as his source... He said he spent around $3000 total and has had it for a few months and listens to it every day since they only have a tv in their bedroom. I was impressed at his music taste as he picked songs from my ipad to play on my system all good stuff, for a young guy I expected the normal "youth stuff"... But anyway he was very impressed with the sound my front room had and then when I told him I only paid around $2500 for everything he was amazed. Then I let him hear the other 2.2 system with the csb1's and when I told him they were $400 he was shocked and wrote down the info. So he wasn't converted since he is already into home audio BUT I did convert him to dual subwoofer "land", he asked if we could cut the subs from the up parlor 2.2 which is my evo2 towers, and I did, he said the bass was better than his b&w's with out the subs, and with the subs it was night and day. He saved the svs website in his phone and said he was going to order a set of sb12s for xmass {Im not sure how he is going to integrate them but I'm sure he will figure it out}. He said he thought adding subs would jumble up the low end and that subs while make a lot of bass make low quality bass, and couldn't believe the sound quality that my dual 12's made in both systems... He texted me this morning and said he couldn't wait until xmass so ordered the sb12s last night!!!

So even though he was already into audio, I showed him the world of subwoofers... My wife said "you can not go one day with out talking about stereo equipment with someone" but I reminder her that she spent over an hour talking about handbags with my sister......

To date, I have advised three people on HT setup. All had seen and heard my setup, appreciated it and solicited my input. All three choose to completely disregard my suggestions even though everything was within budget and

I've thoroughly failed as an audio-video advisor.

Were these friends/family or acquaintances?

If they were friends/family, I wouldn’t be surprised. Sadly in any close relationship there is always an unconscious undercurrent of rivalry/jealousy to various degrees. With the exception of my best 2 friends … we abuse each other’s expertise shamelessly; luckily for me one is a CPA & the other a builder :D … they would rather gnaw off their arm before acknowledging my primacy. Whad’ya gonna do?

Now if you fail with a casual/first time acquaintance, we’ll have to move you out of sales and into the installation crew. :p

I have tried but none of the friends are willing to spend the cash. I was able to get my two brother-in-laws each buy a small 5.1 speaker system and receiver.
One of them got a 5.1 Polk RM650 speaker set with a HK AVR247 receiver. The other got the Energy Take Classic 5.1 with the Onkyo 414 receiver.
