AC3 file not playing properly

I'm new to the forum so I hope I've posted this question in the correct place.

I've just converted (i.e., encoded) 6 mono .wav files into an AC3 (5.1) file using FFmpeg in Audacity. Then, I burned the file to a DVD using Toast 11 Titanium. All of this seems to work fine without any issues.

However, when I play the DVD through my AV receiver (Sony STR K750P), the Left, Right, and Center speaker play correctly...that is, they are discrete. But, the Left Surround and the Right Surround speakers are summed...that is, the same signal is appearing on both...they are not discrete.

Does anyone know what could be happening here...???

Thanks

No definitive answer, but that exactly describes the action of Dolby Pro Logic.

How on Earth do you encode mono wav. files in 5.1? Why would you want to? Mono is best listened to via ONE speaker, not five. I have my system organized to play mono sources just through the center speaker, and it does exactly what the original engineers intended. Mono is mono, and there is now way of making it anything else.
