A Little Something For Christmas?

Coming up on that time of year. I always like to buy a little something for myself for Christmas, so that I'm 100% sure that I get what I want.

If you had maybe $400 burning a hole in your pocket, what would you suggest to buy with it?

I realize it is tough to make a rec with such little info, but let's see what this turns up.

I am currently eyeballing:

EMP 1010i sub
A mixer for my synth and drum machines
A turntable (either the U turn or the Pro-ject carbon)
Powered studio monitors (JBL LSR or KRK Rokit)
Google Nexus 7 Tablet

I never put up a pros/joes thread.

I basically have a 5.1 setup and 2 different 2.0/2.1 setups. Some equip newer and better than others.

Already have a Rythmik sub, could use a replacement for an older Velodyne 10 sub. Have 1 TT, could use another in other setups.

I have probably 300 to 350 vinyls, so yeah. Currently have Technics SL1210 (and I will keep this till Im too old to enjoy it). I could "use" another TT in another setup. I like the U-Turn, just wish it came with a better cart is my only hold-up on that.

Yeah, the upper-model U-turn looks pretty good. Like I say, I wish it came with a better cart, but hard to complain at that price.

I also see the Pro-Ject Debut III in that $300 price range now too.

I wouldn't bother with another sub unless its a real upgrade to what you have now. At the point you are at, you should be chasing after quality, not quantity.

Mixers do not have to cost $400 unless you want a lot of features. Definitely don't blow $400 on something that will just combine a few things. How many signals do you want to mix?

I wouldn't bother with another turntable unless you plan to do dance mixes, in which case you really should go for another Technics, or one of those DJ CD players that act like record players.

I wouldn't bother with a set of powered monitors unless you are unhappy with what you have now. Also, as with the subwoofer, I wouldn't get anything which is just 'so-so' or merely adequate. For your next monitor, get something that kills, like Adam, Genelec, high end LSR, Mackie HR, etc.

As for the tablet, I can't really say anything about. I just can't get into gadgets.

To sum it up, don't just buy something to spend money. For audio hardware, save your money until you can get something that is truly nice. I would also ask, how caught up are you on your blu ray collection? Lotta good sales going on and coming up, black friday, cyber money, some great discounts on blu rays. $400 would get you a nice big haul if you do your homework and get serious with price comparison.
