Yam RXV-657 S-video problem?

2 years ago, I bought a JVC S-VHS VCR, to replace an older unit, due to having some tapes in that format. At the same time I bought the subject Yamaha. The VCR, connected into the 657 S-video input resulted in an unstable picture (tears and blanks out completely at random intervals). When hooked directly to the TV (Panny 42 Plasma), picture was stable. I mentally blamed the VCR, and left it hooked to the TV. Recently, I hooked my Sony camcorder up to the S-video input to the Yam..... Also unstable! The video connection from the Yam to my Panny is Component. Has anyone else had a problem with Yam S-video input, or S-video-to-component upscaling? Any settings, etc I should adjust?

Thanks
