Do I need to run speaker wire for my speakers or can I use single strand electrical wire for long runs??

You should really run speaker cable. Solid cabling will work but stranded is more generally accepted for speaker runs. Depending on the power you're pushing and just how long 'long runs' are, you should run 14ga or potentially 12ga. 12ga should handle just about anything.
