Which FM Tuner? E.g. Yamaha-TX-497, Sangean-HDT-1X, Teac TR-670.

Hello again. I just ordered that EMP EF30T 5.1 Speaker System from the Audioholics store, now I need some music to feed to them. ;)

I have been comparing FM tuners and I was wondering if anyone has any experience comparing these?

Teac TR-670

Sangean-HDT-1X

Yamaha-TX-497

I have been trying to do my homework so I have given up on HD Radio because of its alleged poor sound quality. I am just wondering about the FM reception. I live in New York so tuner selectivity will be the paramount consideration.

Thanks!

If you need a tuner, I have an older Onkyo tuner I will sell you. It's from the late 80's, but never really got that much use and is still in pristine condition. It was my parents and they gave it to me when they upgraded to a HT receiver, and I have no use for it. There is nothing wrong with it, and I don't want much for it. I can get you the model number when I get home if you are interested.

If you need a new Tuner, you might consider this Denon:
http://usa.denon.com/ProductDetails/561.asp

Call J&R, ask for Jacques at Ext. #1015, and ask him if he can sell it for $200, which I think is the best price I've seen online. I can't remember the website, though.

If you're in the city, a very directional antenna that can reject multipath interference will be your biggest factor to good reception.

That, and location. Some areas in the canyons simply suck. FM is basically a line-of-site operation.

You actually might be better of with an older analog tuner where you are.

Oh, you DO realize that you're gonna need an amplifier between whatever tuner you wind up with and those speakers, don't you?

Before HDMI and digital most stereos were basically a good AM/FM receiver. The specs on the tuners were excellent and they were not an after though like they are in most of today's AVRs. GlocksRock Onkyo tuner probably has as good or better specs than today's tuners.

I have an old Fisher Audio studio standard AM/FM tuner that I just retired a couple of months ago and it still provide excellent AM/ FM stereo on my garage system. I bought it over 35 years ago because it was one of the first synthesized digital tuners available. LOL probably around the same time ( or before )as GlockRock's parents bought their Onkyo tuner

I actually have two HD tuners now and i have found the HD to actually sound very good; better than non-HD version. I like to listen to AM talk shows and purchased a passive AM antenna that works very well. Terk AM-1000 Advantage. Some Terk antennaes don't work very well, but htis one does!

I still have the owners manual and original box, but no antenna to include, although a better one that what came with it would be a good idea anyway. It may be a mid 80's not late 80's, since I was really young when they bought it I don't remember exactly, but I can scan the owners manual and take pics if you like.

I know about the antenna, I haven't focused on that yet. Just taking things one at a time.

The Onkyo sounds great! Thanks for offering. PM me with the model number and what you want for it.

:)

Just because you're not interested in a HD radio tuner, doesn't mean you should necessarily rule them out. The Sony XDR-F1HD is a very good analog tuner:

I'm not ruling out HD, it would be a nice bonus. And the price is quite good. It sounds like a great little tuner.

Was I hallucinating or did the reviewer say that when testing this tuner, the word "SONY" (in japanese lettering) was traced on the oscilloscope?

The tracking shows you got the tuner, but I haven't heard back from you since you sent me the funds? Is everything ok with the tuner?

You should drop the Teac from the running, Teac doesn't have a good track record for tuners and I believe that one has received fairly negative reviews, someone correct me if I am wrong on this. I honestly don't want to search for the bad reviews.:D

Since he bought my old Onkyo tuner, I doubt he is still looking. ;)

Oh, well for future reference to those that might be looking for the Teac tuners.;) To be honest I just read the first 5 posts or so.:D

I've got a Sony XDR-F1HD coming in the mail tomorrow, and am very excited about it, largely due to the already-much-discussed unpredecented FM reception capabilities. Apparently some newly developed chips take it where FM tuners have never gone before. Not a bad deal for $100.

I would recommend reading my review of the current Denon tuner. You can find it in the member reviews area. It is the best under $1000 tuner I've ever tested and noticeably better than the tuner stages built into AVR's. No digital hower like the Sangean.

I've had my Sony XDR-F1HD for a few days now. I think a lot of people would be very, very surprised by what it can do. Analog FM reception is a whole new ballgame with this technology, and the price of admission ($100) is pretty sweet.

If you are still looking, take a look at this. In your area this should be perfect for you and it is $100. This also comments on that Sangeon at the same time.
