What Drivers to Stay Away from When Building Loudspeakers

Made a list of my favorite sounding speakers of all time, 50 plus different pairs. Ranging from the 80s to present day. More than half of them used metal tweeters and plastic woofers. A quarter of them used silk tweeters and plastic woofers. So what was not on the list?

- Metal Woofers
- Ribbon Tweeters
- Concentric Drivers
- Full Range Drivers
- Ceramic Drivers
- Active Crossovers
- Powered Speakers
- Sealed Enclosures
- Transmission Line Enclosures
- Compression Horns
- Waveguides
- Ring Radiators
- Piezo Tweeters
- Super Tweeters
- Bipolar Speakers
- Dipolar Speakers
- THX Speakers
- Particleboard Enclosures
- Cast Metal Enclosures
- Extruded Enclosures
- Soundbars
- Small Satellite Speakers

I wish manufacturers would stay away from these technologies. The market would be filled with better sound.

No, such a list is a good idea, and, to be honest, I have noticed something much the same. In fact, let me also make a list of speakers I find disagreeable:

- tall speakers
- short speakers
- fat speakers
- skinny speakers
- smart speakers
- stupid speakers
- dark speakers
- bright speakers
- fast speakers
- slow speakers
- rich speakers
- poor speakers
- good speakers
- bad speakers

I wish manufacturers would stay away from these technologies. The market would be filled with better sound.

Not too long ago, I've had a chance to listen to the Philharmonic 3 towers and I must confess... Out of any current production loudspeakers and at any price, the Philharmonic 3 was the best sound that I've ever heard without much competition. The only other speakers which gave that incredible depth, detail, and emotional connection to music were the multi-thousand dollar offerings from the big players, i.e. B&W 800 Diamond (fantastic), Focal Utopia, Dynaudio C II/C IV, Sonus Faber Aida, etc.

I'm fascinated by RAAL. There's something incredibly addicting about it. And this is coming from a Scan-Speak fan. Bravo to Dennis. Philharmonic 3 towers are the best of the best.

Yet, now he says that all ribbons and all TLs are crap.

I'm sure we are all to the point that we are eagerly awaiting the ..... Ban Hammer on this kid.

That reminds me of an old Armour hot dogs jingle...

"Hot dogs, Armour hot dogs
what kind of kids eat Armour hot dogs?
Fat kids, skinny kids,
kids that climb on rocks
tough kids, sissy kids
even kids with chicken pox
love hot dogs, Armour hot dogs
the dogs kids love to bite"

Or, in this case, the trolls dogs love to bite. :D

I don't really like the sound or looks of speakers with grills.

I wish manufacturers would stay away from these technologies. The market would be filled with better sound.

Speaking of grilles, or grilled, Did someone say.............. "CHEESE"............?

I know 5 facts about cheese and both of them are wrong.

List of cheeses;

Swiss
Cheddar
Gouda
Smoked Gouda
Gruyere

That's my list of cheeses.

I think a loudspeaker cabinet made out of hard cheese would sound great - no resonances coming out the cabinet.

I am in the process of finishing a small cookies & cream milkshake from chik-fil-a. Took 4 lactaid ultra and 5 dairy digest complete pills (for other milk sugars). Wish me luck :)
