realistically about 400 or so. i can get the jbl-l8400 new for 400 bucks, and that's what I'm leaning towards, Ive heard one demoed, but today i saw a M&K v1250 used for 400 bucks. the jbl being 600wats and the M&K being 125watts.

It can be tricky, wattage can be greatly exagerated. Some can claim 1000 watts but may only actually put out a fraction of that. Some will only put out their peak short term wattage. Others your going to pay for build quality and the name that is on the sub.

Here are some subs that will get you out of the wattage mentality-

I'll put Epiks 350watt Bash against JBL's 600watt sub anyday:D

There is alot more that goes into building a subwoofer then watts. Enclosure design, amp, driver, crossover, all play a big part. Don't get caught up on the watts. Watts are determined from enclosure size/design and driver.

And you just can't purchase a subwoofer and connect it to your system and expect performance. Choosing the right subwoofer is critical to your HT experience. Choosing a subwoofer is all about your rooms volume.

What size room, and are there openings to other areas of the house?

Listen to Mazer, I second everything he said. And forget subs from Best Buy and other big brick and mortor chain stores, you'll do much better buying from an Internet Direct company as posted before. Hsu Research, SVsound (SVS), and Epik would be on my short list.

First two questions:

How big is your room, and how much is your budget for a sub?
