Subwoofer Mods & Questions + Intro

Hello all you audioholics! My name is Brandon, and I'm a 14 year old programmer that loves to mod stuff.
I first started modding with my old Pentium 4 computer from 2001, and then I moved to a cheap pair of Sony MDRZX100 headphones that I got for my birthday.

My Logitech z313 speakers just came in yesterday, so naturally I thought "What can I do to make these look/sound better?" However, a quick Google search couldn't find anything good, so I went to Head-fi forums which I've been a member for about 3 weeks, and they recommended me to this place!

So, to my questions:
- What are some generic mods for subwoofers? (Satelites mods would be cool to!)
- What are some signs that I'm pushing my speakers to hard?

I saw a video on Youtube in which the guy tried to blow the subwoofer with a bassy video, and he couldn't?? I use a EQ to increase bass and decrease treble, so if I did the same thing, it would be much more bassy.

Anyways, cheers!

Mods to subs don't usually help anything audibly speaking. Some are designed poorly but most often the enclosure is designed to get the best out of the driver. If you want to mod to make it more aesthetically pleasing go for it but you might make it sound worse. Important; keep the internal volume the same, keep the port length and cross section area the same and you should be fine audibly.

Sign you are pushing your speakers to hard would be it sounding bad. Clipping is a nasty sound that you won't be able to miss, if it happens turn it down.

EQing with the type of speaker I think you are talking about will change the sound but won't likely give you any 'more' bass, just might make it sound better to your ears. I spent time and money on a sub that generally speaking I can't 'hear'. IMO subs that make you notice them are failures.

Okay, that explains why I couldn't find any mods. . .
With my EQ settings, it sure sounds like its giving it more bass. Well, I can feel it a lot better at least.

Hi Brandon! Welcome to Audioholics.

1st Rule of Audioholics: Never stop upgrading.
2nd Rule: NEVER STOP UPGRADING...

I kid, I kid.

Since you are a tinkerer... learn the underlying principles and you can look into building your own speakers/subwoofer. DIY gives the most bang for buck and IMHO, satisfaction. For now, becoming a regular on the DIY sections. Here are a few DIY enthusiast resources,

Regarding that upgrade then... Keep a lookout for these on Craigslist.
