It may seem expensive, but the care and love that went into the research without a big-name publisher financing the writers' time and effort make it totally worth it. The details of every piece of gear used at EMI's Abbey Road Studios go down to not only the microphones used in the studio, but even the talkback mics! They also write about the facility and its history even before EMI owned it. This is HUGE book and the packaging has been made to look like a open reel multitrack tape box.
