question about room shape and subwoofer size/power

I am getting ready to set up a home theater in a medium-large rectangular room. It's about 28x13 with a large open entryway on one of the short ends and a 3x7 chunk taken out by a bathroom near the entry. I intend to set up the home theater and seating only in the far section of the room, all the way across from the entry, with the sofa in the corner on the long wall and the tv on the opposite long wall a few feet from the corner. So, basically, the room is a big rectangle but I'm only using half of it for my home theater.

My question is can I go with a smaller subwoofer than the room size dictates because of the way I'm arranging the room? I'm basically setting it up as though it were a 13x13 room and leaving the rest open (there will be some other furniture but not oriented towards the tv).

thanks for any advice.
