Proper care and maintenance for speakers

Is there anything one needs to do to prolong the life of their speakers? Service-type upkeep in other words.

I’m thinking not so much about the cabinets, but the actual components themselves. The rubber around the speakers for example. Does it need to be lubricated or conditioned in any way to keep from cracking as the years go on?

Thanks

In a word, no. I'd shy away from even dusting the cones.

On the other hand environmental factors can make a big difference. The more you make humidity low and consistent, temperature consistent and relatively low (about 70F), and keep them away from moisture, pets, and children the longer they'll look and perform like new. Some speaker components may deteriorate over time, like some driver surrounds and crossover caps, but there's no maintenance that can be done to avoid aging.

Shield speakers from strong direct sunlight. It causes the rubber to rot faster.
